So over the weekend, I started looking at a shop to weld the shock relocation kit onto Caitlyn. The thought was that I would take it to a local shop sooner this year than going to a local member that does side work. I reached out to a place (not going to mention names but if you're local and are a part of some groups, you can figure out the shop name) the local FJ crew uses for work on their rigs and I saw some videos on Youtube and thought they did a great job doing a CMC and snorkel install for one of them. After a couple days and several emails back and forth explaining what I needed done, I decided to add on the shackle flip to the quote just to gauge what a shop would charge for both jobs IF I wanted to take it in and not mess with it (I'm impatient). For the shackle flip and shock relocation work requested, they wanted $900. That's not that terrible considering what had to be done but they wanted to keep the vehicle for 2 days (not ideal). So I asked what they would want to charge me for just the shock relocation since I have no capacity to get that done myself in my garage. So they came back with a quote to simply weld the relocation bracket to the frame and the shock tabs to the axle (since I already have the kit from Jerry welded together). They want $720 (seven hundred and twenty dollars) alone for the shock kit welding job!! I damn near fainted!! HOLY F@*$^ING SH!T!!! ARE THEY INSANE?? That means for $180 they will do the shackle flip work themselves? I'm not a math science guy..but their numbers seem way off. I thought they would be reverse since that welding jobs couldn't be more than 2 hours of work (maybe 3) and all the elbow grease goes into the shackle flip pounding the rivets out.

So I have a few local guys to get in contact with to see if they can handle the work and if they can not bend me over Caitlyn's hood like this shop wants to do. If all else fails, the second weekend of March is the fiancee's bachelorette party. Now there have been rumors that they are all going to be at my house for the weekend. There is no way in hell I will be staying there that long, estrogen-filled weekend so I will need somewhere to go, something to do, and somewhere to live. I contacted @NwiTACO to see if he was available that weekend to get the shock relocation done and then perhaps wheel that Sunday and flex her out! Here's hoping!

Going to be taking the shackle flip parts into the powder coater this weekend! Let's hope they don't try to pull a fast one on me too..

 

Going rate is 100$ an hour man. This is why I'm going to start to learn how to weld this weekend.

Well damn! That is insane, I am so glad that I have a friend who can weld. He did my Chevy swap AND shock relocation for a decent gift card to his favorite restaurant and some pizzas when we were working

Lucky !!!!! I wouldn't mind taking up being an apprentice to someone local. I hope I can start making those local connections. I love hanging with @NwiTACO but he's about an hour and change one way. Found a couple guys 5-15 minutes away; now that would be awesome!

Tempted to go back and have them do the flip for $180..assuming my math was right and that's what they meant... they can go themselves..
