Go old school and use a milk crate. Flip it over for extra storage.

I heard a story of a bush pilot that had a 5 gallon bucket as his ‘flight bag’ with all his books and maps in it. He really needed it as a step to get up into the plane (rope on handle to pull it up).
    Made a great stool too.
Apparently he also had some garbage bags in it and could dual purpose as a shitter! Best multi purpose use of a 5 gallon bucket.

I like and use a 5 gallon bucket with lid... Waterproof storage, nice seat, easily replaceable, use 2 with a plank and you got a bench

An old milk crate works, however the “step n store” is ideal. It’s a seat, step, and dry storage, we have a Rubbermaid.

Direct battery tap winch connector. Partial letter blackout. Partial emblem removal. Rear bed opening stabilizers. Tailgate insert panel that smoothed it out. Raised seats. K&N air filter. Alpine sound system (no sub-woofer). LED interior lights. Front end leveled (+3/4"). Pedal Commander. Rear headrest delete. Drivers side grab handle. Blue SumoSpring frame stops front/rear. Front trailer hitch. New interior 120v power tap. Behind driver rear seat delete to storage platform.
70+ with replacement hip. Have several of these arouind. Truck, tractor, basement, shop and barn. They're great for truck bed access and make dandy sit-on work stools.

Thanks for the additional responses. Milk Crate and bucket ideas are thrifty and smart but I wanted to minimize space to stow a step while under way. I went with the Honey-Can_Do folding step (about $15.00 on Amazon). Light but strong enough to hold me and takes up very little room when folded.
