By denying you're super cool and humble, implies that you are super cool and humble. Got em

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
What is the truck being used for?
A family truckster to and from the grocery store and soccer games? Go 2nd gen.
A dedicated trail rig or mainly camping/hunting/outdoorsing rig. Go 1st gen.

If you want performance... I'd look at the 6cyl over the 4cyl. You don't get much "performace" out of the 4cyls.

I have owned a 4 cylinder 1st Gen manual 4x4 and it was fine around the city however where I was always disappointed was on the highway especially on hills. I upgraded to the 6 cylinder 1st Gen 4x4 with manual and never looked back. Night and day on the highway and nice around town. About the same fuel economy as the 4 cylinder because you operated at lower RPM's.

I have also just come out of a 2nd Gen 6 cylinder manual 4x4. Very nice truck. Fast with nothing bad to say about it. Can't speak on a 4 cylinder which I would never go back to.

Neighbor just got a new 3rd gen last month. OMG is it nice and it makes my 1st gen with it’s anemic 4-banger, pogo-stick suspension, manual windows and door locks and crappy stock radio seem like a Red Flyer wagon in comparison. But like jbrandt said it’s mostly about personal preference. I would not trade him even-up just because I like looks and size of my 1st gen.

All that said, 9-15K would score a super sweet low mileage 1st gen

Right??? I've had a 2011 V6, 2010 V6, and now I'm on my 1997 2.7. Gotta say as far as driving experience the 97 is the best hands down. You just love driving them. I've also never had a problem finding parts.

I agree, the 4 cylinders for 1st gens have maybe 2 things better: 2 mpg and manual hubs but if you aren't getting a 4x4... v6 honestly. I didn't like having to drop into 3rd to get up hills on the freeway going 55 at somewhere around 3500-4000 rpm.
