This is more of a question for whoever may have an answer.

As you may know, I just picked up my first Tacoma about a month ago. I have been going through it little by little with reliability improvements in mind.

I know the entire history of this truck as it was family-owned since it was new. Now with 2001,000 on the odometer, I am enjoying my new friends here and tinkering on such a worthy project subject.

So back to the HVAC system. I don't think there is a problem whatsoever in its operation. It does everything it is supposed to with this exception. Even though all of its speeds work from low to high. The blower is weak or very lacking even on high. Is seems that this is the norm for a 2012 Prerunner crew cab. Or is there something going wrong with my fan?

If it is the norm, is there a reliable mod that can improve on the situation? I like the power of being able to blow my hat off should I feel the need.

2nd gens don't really have powerhouse A/C units, they are sufficient at best. I'd start by replacing the cabin air filter if you havent yet.

I agree, and if you notice the AC doesn’t seem as cool when parked or idling.
That’s pretty normal too, these trucks like air moving over the condenser to preform at it best.
Use Recirculate Mode with A/C on. But you also need to run fresh air mode at times to keep the “mildew” smell down.

BTW, Congrats on the new Tacoma.
Hope you enjoy it and it gives another 200k+ trouble free miles.

Do a search for Blower motor resistor and check the cable connectors on the resistor pack and down on the blower motor itself. Look for burned contacts which would give you a high resistance and a reduced fan speed.

On the list but I have not gotten to it yet. If it would have been a snake it would have bitten me. Good idea!

I agree with the above. I have a 2014. The a/c is nice and cold at speed and only slowly lessens as you sit in traffic: Still cold enough, but you can feel the difference and to be fair it was only really noticable when the temps were approaching 90 and above this summer after sitting in traffic for a while or stop and go. Putting it in Recirc mode eliminates most of the effect on mine. On the highway, once the cabin got comfortable, I could run the fan on low or 2 and it would maintain the cabin temp no problem. I feel this would all go away if the truck had a variable-speed electric fan out front like the other 90% of vehicles on the road today have. I'm suprised Toyota doesn't have them on the Tacoma.

You know with almost everything I read agreeing with the fact that the AC/heat blowers leave a lot to be desired in the CFM moving department. And being as well known as it is to most Taco owners affected, I can't believe that I haven't heard of a fix or mod to improve on the situation. I.E. perhaps a replacement blower motor etc..

Sounds like it is time for you to step up and develop one.

Mine blows just fine as far as I am concerned. I never use high speed at all and I live on the South Carolina Coastal area.

I think you may need a new fan. I say this because of the point you mentioned that yours runs slow/same speed on all the settings. The hint is that you said even on high it runs slow. On all systems I know, "High" setting bypasses a resistor pack. I just got rid of a Buick that had a fan failure. 104,000 miles. Symptoms were a fan that ran intermittent off-and-on or slow at any speed, then finally quit. Replaced it and it was back to normal. Note: that car had climate control so variable speed via a module: no resistor pack. It would run at variable inappropriate speeds for the conditions, have trouble running at all and then "wake up", and then finally just quit for good.

I read that post as well, but I think your confusing mine with another post. My truck's fan has all speeds working, it just does not seem to blow nearly as strong as my other vehicles etc. I am pretty sure it is the same as most others that you hear complaints about here etc.. I am trying to learn if anyone has come up with an answer to the poor design if that is what it is.

Good to hear you are satisfied with your Taco's blowers capability, here in Texas's 100 + deg summers it can be a tad lacking at times.

South Carolina is a Beautiful state, My dad and brother were Navy, and my brother was stationed there in Charleston. I visited a few times with he was there and enjoyed the beaches and wildlife.
