I thought the whole cartridge oil filters was a requirement on new vehicles for the last several years? My wife's 2013 Rav4 uses a cartridge style filter. Or maybe its just a Toyota thing.

Gen 2 is better for a number of reasons. The oil filter is just one of them...:duel:

I love my 3rd gen. But if I had to morph them I'd take the styling of the 3rd with powerplant of the 2nd. I can't sacrifice on the styling.

I do like the top mounted oil filter on my 2nd gen but I do prefer cartridge style. Especially those of my old 80's Mercedes diesels. The cartridge / cannister is as big as a 46oz can of pinapple juice or at least very close in size.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
The 7MGTE is one of my least favorite Toyota oil changes. Followed by the A Series engines in 1st gen ravs (under manifold and burns)

3rd gen is nowhere near bad to deal with

My 2019 2TR-FE 4 cylinder has the spin on oil filter and I’m glad reading threads about the V6 modifying the cartridge filter with valves, replacing plastic housing with a metal one, etc lol. Spin off, spin on. Yep like it.

I have a 2010 Taco and a 2017 Prius. Yes, the 4.0 is about the easiest oil filter setup I've ever seen, but the Prius isn't much more involved. You take the cartridge part off with a special filter wrench, replace the filter and O-ring, and put the whole thing back on. That's pretty much it.

My 2015 Taco's oil change routine: step one, drink a beverage, put container to the side. Step two, slide under the truck with the drain pan loosen the plug, lay back and let the oil drain, then replace plug. Step three, pull myself off the ground using whatever hand holds I can find to get myself vertical again. (it's not the age, it's the mileage). Take the previous beverage container place it under the drain nipple on the filter. Spin off old filter, spin on new filter. Remove used beverage container now containing slight amount of oil, and discard. Refill the engine with new oil. Start engine check for leaks. Step four, Open another beverage, transfer used oil from collection pan to now empty container from the new oil and take to local auto parts store for recycling.

Takes longer to drive to recycle the oil than it does to do steps 1, 2 and 3.

Wife's 2014 Prius V oil change routine: After she complains to me to get it done four or five times, take it to the Valvoline quick change. Every other oil change, replace all of the belly pan fasteners that they manage to break. I hate that car… there is no way I'm messing with that stupid cartridge filter.

I want to know why they designed 2nd gen oil filters to be on top of the engine, upside down. For what I don’t get it

I think they work quite well, certainly much less mess than many other designs if you do it correctly and best of all no hot exhaust components in the way.

Yeah it’s all new to me! I did it right the first time, now I just use a water bottle under the nipple thing. Easy peasy and yeah little to no mess. My super duty took 17 quarts and I’d need a homer 5 gal bucket every oil change, big change lol

Yea my dad has a 12 Ford 6.7 with the 1/4 turn drain plug, I can't tell you how many oil slicks I've made on the concrete with that silly design, the entire 13 qts is out in about 15 secs whether your ready or not.
