looking to get a used gen 2 double cab in the next couple months, budget is $16k or under so likely between 110 and 150k miles. I have never purchased a used vehicle with this many miles, but there seems to be a ton out there. How many miles can I expect out of a gen 2 before needing something big? What are the things I should look for?

Thanks for all the help, looking forward to making my build thread!

Kicker 12 inch sub and amp. Focal speakers. jba offroad UCAs.. Detroit truetrac rear end... bilstein 5100 rear and 6125 front coilovers. Nfab front bumper with KC apollo lights, bed lights, bluesea systems fuse box....lots of painted stuff.
Leaf spring recall... if it's 4wd then front diff bearing whine (but it should have had that done lonnnngggggg ago)..

    Annoyances:

    1. steering shimmy...good luck.. comes and goes.. they all do it..
    2. driveline vibe on takeoff.. no real solution here.. doesn't hurt anything.they all do it.
3.not a whole lot else... little things.. too trivial to matter...

Someone else will chime in I'm sure... I have an 06.. lots of squeaks now due to age... steering shimmy.. comes and goes...

No real mechanic issues.. knock on wood.. I replaced the valve cover gasket (easy..takes an hour TOPS) at 85k. had a slow ooze.

    Everything else was upgrade based.

I own an 05 double cab TRD OFF-ROAD with 133xxx miles. I got it 3 or 4yrs ago with 87xxx on it. My motor is sound, still has lots of power for a v6. Sometimes I'll get a bump in shifting though (automatic ). Hope this helps, I'm not a mechanic.
    *edit...
Also got a new frame courtesy of a recall on these year models that were sold in cold climate areas where roads were salted (Maryland)

Check the frame. These engines will go 200k miles easy. Dont worry about cabin fan ticking it is a small annoyance issue. Look throuh forums tons of good info.

    Good luck

I forgot the cabin fan. replaced mine once.. took 15 minutes and that's cause I couldn't find my sockets.

It depends on how it's driven, maintained, and the environment in which it is used. Here's an example of what it possible:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/400-000-miles.404359/

Depending on your location, frame rust may be a big concern, otherwise, there is a reason Tacoma's are #1 in resale value, they are a darn good, reliable truck overall.

I've got a 2006 DCLB. It's got 225k on it, I'm the 3rd owner. Bought it with 105k on it 5 years ago. No major mechanical issues. I've replaced the u-joints, belts, pulleys, half shafts due to my off-roading, wheel bearings and of course normal maintenance items.

truck is still going strong! Biggest complaint is the driveline "bump" when I come to a stop and when I go from a stop.

Hoping it lasts me another 100k! I've been super happy with the truck, hasn't left me stranded yet.

Second biggest complaint is I have a garage full of upgrades and not enough time to install them all!

I'd have to agree, mine has none of these issues.

I have a 2006 with 124k on it, no issues other than some creaks here and there (had the frame a leaf springs replaced over the summer) and I need to replace my antenna (corrosion) and the cabin fan as it is ticking and driving me nuts if the radio isn't on.

Literally the only issue I've had with my truck is that stupid A/C ticking noise, but it goes away at higher fan speeds.

I also drained the battery accidentally, but that was my dumb ass fault.

Otherwise, it's a rock solid truck.

127k on mine and I literally can't think of one issue or complaint. The center console latch is a little sticky, but it hasn't bothered me enough to look into why. I wish I had a front differential, but I can't blame the truck for that. :anonymous:
