I guess i got really lucky with my 17, or maybe i just have a better outlook on things. I (tolerated) my '12 for almost six years. It was a reliable friend that never let me down...but that's about the only positive thing i can say about it. The fit and finish sucked, the seats were uncomfortable, it rode like ass, the 4.0 felt anemic to me, and the trans shifted so hard it always felt on the verge of failure.
My 17 however feels like i'm driving a limited 4runner. Rides great, steers great, seats and interior are lightspeed ahead of my 12. As far as the drivetrain goes...go ahead and burn me at the stake but it puts the 4.0 to shame. Tons of power, shifts are smooth and can barely even be felt, towing is awesome...nothng but good things to say.

sorta feel like i'm parading around my good luck with this '17 but :notsure: oh well...I kinda take the 3rd gen bashing a little personal

Just wondering, “GMC Guy”, (insert eye roll here)
Do you currently own a Toyota Tacoma, even your second Gen?

The catalyst of this phenomena can simply be traced to Envy, in my opinion. It’s like the 17’ Pro owners who are devestated because they thought they had Cement on exclusive lockdown, only to be rattled by the release of the ‘18’s with the very same “exclusive” color. So they turn to an easy target like the grille of the 18’s or any other number of variables to bash..( the 18 grille is indeed hideous by the way but is an easy fix.)
    Grasping at straws.

Others, like the OP, have similar qualms, none of which can really be backed up by the consensus of the majority of fellow Tacoma owners within the realm of this forum. Their intention? Perhaps we’ll never know. Chalk it up to just being a hater. Personally if I got a boner over GMC’s or Chevy’s I’d just pull the rip cord and go and pass my time on those forums instead of TacomaWorld.

Hi, my name is Bill and I'm a Tacoma junky.....I've owned a 98 Xtra cab, 2004 TRD OR, a 2008 TRD OR, a 2011 TRD OR, 2015 TRD OR, 2017 TRD OR, another 2004 TRD OR and my current Tacoma is a 2015 TRD PRO.

I should have kept my 1st 2015 Tacoma but I wanted the new 3rd Gen so I bought the 2017 TRD OR. After 6months and 12,000 I had enough of the feeling of no power, no low end torque and the constant shifting bugged me to no end. I understand that Toyota did all engine/tranny changes for better MPG's but come on Toyota it doesn't even feel like a truck anymore! I sold it to a local Toyota dealer and I was glad to get rid of it!

Here's my thought that sounds so simple and I hope that Toyota considers this for future Tacomas. My 2014 Lexus GS 350 F-Sport (my weekend car) has a dial near the arm rest that can change the power band and shifting points from eco mode, to normal mode, to sport mode, to sport Plus mode (complete awesomeness!). If Toyota added this feature to the Tacoma it would keep everyone happy.......ARE YOU LISTENING TOYOTA???!!!!

Anyway, I couldn't be happier with my 2015 TRD PRO as it only has 23,000 miles and I love the power of the 4.0L and the growl of the TRD exhaust......and who doesn't love the ultra rare Inferno color?!!

The Texas Plant is highly automated while the plant in Mexico is mostly hands on, there has been a article posted up a few times about the differences between them.

    Too few to list.
I have a 17 3rd gen and it has been great so far aside from the sticking tach which has been replaced. Otherwise problem free... It is the i4 though. No way I'm getting rid of my 15.

I agree with you... I went from 3rd gen to 2nd gen to save some money and pay off some bills, but when I had my 2017, I felt it was smooth (I made sure it had the TSB for the transmission before I rolled off the lot) and rode great... never had any problems at all with it.

the 2nd gen just isnt as refined or smooth as the 3rd gen was.

I had a first gen, second gen, and now a third gen....

In my honest opinion they just got better and better....

I love my 2017, with no problems at all...

2nd generations have a nicer interior and better seats than 3rd gen. You also don't have too pay out of your pocket too fix a brand new truck like the 3rd gen. have too.

This quote surprises me, I thought the 3rd gen would have had a significantly upgraded interior.

I've had no issues with my 2017, but then again it has only 2k miles on it and I bought it with 5 miles on it.
