My 2017 Tacoma came with all the bells and whistles. The only thing I had an issue with was my battery crapped out after 2 years or so. Was still within the warranty period and got it replaced the same day. Everything else worked great. Toyota's reliability is what got me into my 4th Toyota, including the 2020 I'm in now. And if that's not enough, you've got the excellent resale value these trucks hold.

120,000 miles and only thing I’ve done is replace the battery twice.

Not a 3rd gen owner, but...

If you're looking at the really long term, there are reports of timing cover leaks on high mile (150k+) trucks. Unfortunately the fix requires pulling the engine which is $3-4k. It's too early to know how widespread this issue will be, but it was extremely common on the mid 2000s toyota 3.5 V6's (not the 4.0).

Edit - actually the 4.0 too. Thanks @shakerhood

If its not your daily driver you'll appreciate and like the Tacoma that much more, especially coming from a CR-V. I drive my '03 RSX to work as much as I can but after a few days boy does it feel good to hop in the Tacoma. 18 months and 25K miles on mine.

80,000 miles on 2.7 4 cylinder engine. Regular oil changes, front brakes, transmission fluid change, are about all ive done. Only issue ive had so far was the recall on the rear diff leak.

Had a 2005 for almost 8 years before the headgaskets went on the 4.0- otherwise it was a great truck, even had Toyota swap the frame for the tune of $12k all covered for me the second owner.

Traded it to the dealership and drove our 2017 home off the lot. It has been three years and 50k km now with not one issue. It pulls better, gets better mileage, has current safety and screens. Don’t miss the 2nd Gen for a second.

Mine's fine so far but we'll see how it goes when we get into the six-digits. The $3000 valve cover gasket sounds like a portent of things to come, frankly. All this plastic fantastic is bound to turn to powder in a few years.

My 2017 Limited is almost 4 years old and has 55k miles. I guess I've have 2 minor issues. First, the original battery failed when it was a year old. The dealer replaced it for free.

Recently, after switching to an iPhone 11, it is losing bluetooth connection mid call, which is really annoying. I haven't figured this one out, yet.

I’ve got a ‘19 OR SB with nearly 30K on the odometer. Zero complaints so far. The shifting issues you hear so much about here is nonexistent on my truck. Honestly, it shifts just as smoothly as any other vehicle I’ve ever had. My buddy has ‘16 Sport that shifted crazy, but I believe his issue was sorted when he brought in and had the TSB done. I’ve been out in his truck with him and it no longer does it.

If you like the truck, take it out on a test drive and buy with confidence. It’ll probably outlast you.

27k miles (14k from me) and no issues so far. I even have the technology package with blind spot monitoring, heated seats, dual climate, etc. As some have stated, many of the reported issues are overblown. I tend to find that most people who complain about it tend to have either had their previous vehicle a long time, or tend to swap out vehicles pretty often.

For me it was a huge upgrade over my last truck. It has its quirks, but every vehicle does. Best advice is to go test one for yourself. Don't buy into the BS. Everyone loves to complain on social media. Drive one for yourself and see what you think about it. I have found if you research anything long enough (especially if you come to a dedicated forum like this) you'll find every vehicle has issues for someone.

My '16 has about 85k miles. The only things I've replaced are tires, factory battery after 4 years in the Florida heat, air filters and all lubricating fluids. I am still on the factory brakes, factory clutch, factory coolant, factory hoses, factory belt(s) no check engine lights and no recalls.

I have an iPhone 10 - it also recently started loosing bluetooth connection to the vehicle and dropping calls (after about 10 minutes). It started loosing connection to my watch as well...both watch and phone are updated.

Just crossed the one year mark with my Tacoma I bought new. 2019 SR 4x4 4 cylinder automatic. Didn’t want a bunch of bells and whistles nor did I want to pay for it. Just wanted a basic 4wd truck with some still moderately easy tech I could still work on. The trans does hunt when towing, but other than not towing I haven’t really had any complaints. It’s a truck, not a sports car or a house. It’ll do truck stuff. Just avoid GM and Chrysler at all costs and you’ll be fine.

2016 OR DCLB with 55k miles owned since new and is my daily driver. The only issues I've had were two TSBs performed, one was a reflash of the ECU for the R to D delay the 1st year and a weep of oil in the rear diff the 2nd year.

Other than that the truck has been fine and I'll keep it easily for another 5-10 years.

I bought my truck new - in Jan '19...I've got 76K miles on it. I drive a lot around our horse farm too - using 4WD - our farm is on a river so it gets it's share of mud and water. I am able to take this truck along our trails in the woods and places our larger vehicles will just not fit - this to me a HUGE deal!! The truck handles the mud and muck of the trails with ease. This truck is my daily driver for business too and while I'll admit if I need to take more than one business client out, I will take another vehicle as the back set is not designed for comfort - however business associates that ride in the front are comfortable. This is NOT a luxury vehicle by any means but it is comfortable to drive. We have several vehicles and the Tacoma is the least expensive of our vehicles, yet it is BY FAR my favorite. I must say this truck is a joy to own...it is like a SCH German Shepherd (we have owned Schutzund Shepherds for years)...It is probably not number one at most anything, but it is top 5 in most everything I would ever need! As far as ownership - we have a very nice dealership about an hour from our farm (near my office) and I take it there every 5k miles for routine maintenance - that's all it has needed. I must admit I only do light towing with this truck - we have larger vehicles for big trailers and such - but when I do tow (usually a zero turn or something like that), the truck performs just fine. I'm older (58) and my days of lusting over vehicles has (mostly) gone and I almost never use the term 'value' when describing a vehicle. In my opinion the Tacoma is indeed a TERRIFIC VALUE..it is a tool that gets the job(s) done, and a tool you can certainly rely on for years to come. Good luck on whatever you choose.

I'm on my third 3rd gen Tacoma. I had a 2016, 2017, and now I have a 2020. I put about 31k miles each on the 2016 and 2017 and I'm almost at 8k on my 2020. I can't really speak to long term issues, obviously, but I haven't any real issues with any of my 3rd gens. My dad also had a 2016 and 2018 Tacoma and my nephew has a 2019 and neither of them have had issues with their trucks.

I think long term the 3rd gen will be comparable to the 2nd gen in terms of reliability. For as much hate as the 3rd gen receives, there's not a lot of examples of catastrophic failures of drivetrain components and things like that. It's funny, I never hear any of the normal complaints on TW when I talk to other random Tacoma owners.
