The Nissan Frontier has had 10 years to work out it's issues and according to posts on their forums, most of their issues had been worked out since 2010. The 3rd Gen Tacoma is in its "first" year as a "new" generation and has many issues.

I'm basing off if I were to buy a 2016 midsize truck today. To me, the Frontier is the better for value and reliability.

And my 2007 FJ Cruiser is a first model year vehicle. It had a way smoother roll out than the the 3rd gen. The 3rd gen is a botch.

But you have neither right now for any first hand experience.

You are however free to choose on what you want to buy to meet your own personal needs.

As for my own first hand experience, the 3rd gen I currently own has not exhibited problems and as of 5k miles, has still given me no reason to question it's reliabilty to enjoy it as long as my previous trucks.

It took me 2-3 months of searching every dealership in Houston before I found a 2016 DCSB TRD off-Road 50 miles North of Houston area. The day I picked it was the morning it had just been pulled off a truck from the factory. That was in early April...

I don't own either but I do extensive research and test drive. In my opinion Toyota watered down the Tacoma further with the 3.5 engine and transmission. How can it do truck functions with no low-end torque? And if you push the pedal down to do truck functions, the 3.5 works so hard that it starts getting worse mpg's than the 4.0 in the 2nd gen it replaced?

With a 2016 Frontier, you get a 4.0, low end torque, boxed frame, rear discs. It's pretty much a real truck I can do truck things with.

I'm hoping Toyota realizes the mistake they made. It is already showing how a 10 year old Nissan pick up truck is gaining ground in their market share. Maybe that will wake Toyota up to put out a better truck.

Wow, that's crazy. Here you could have taken your pick from any one of the multiple TRD's that are on the lot.

Forums are the frontlines for communications if there are vehicle issues or questions. That is how it is these days. No auto manufacturer will admit to mistakes quickly. Look at the 3rd Gen low transmission fluid issue.

The 2007 FJ Cruiser had a few small issues from their forums but not until way after 50,000 miles. All these issues with the 3rd Gen Taco are under 10,000 miles.

My previous 1st gen and earlier trucks worked just fine with less than 200 hp and a smaller size, hell, one was even carburated.

You guys are wanting Tundra performance from a Taco.

Forums tend to be full of shit too.... here's some advice, get off the forums and do some first hand research then be happy with what you bought instead of bitch about what others want to buy.

No, I want a midsized V6 truck with low end torque.

In other words, you want what the Tacoma USED TO HAVE.

So you like to think 8 month old 2016 3rd gen models with vibrations, low transmission fluid, rear diff leaks, oil leaks, and crankshaft position failures are more reliable than a 2016 Frontier that had most of its issues fixed in 10 years?

I'd still deal with all those issues before being caught dead in a Nissan.

I used to hate on Nissan too, but I've come to find out they are way underrated and the last 5 years of them have been way reliable. There is a reason why they are gaining ground in the Toyota Tacoma's market share for being a 10 year old truck.

I hate to say it but it's looking like a Nissan Frontier will be in my driveway with 2 Toyotas.

Oh I'm a member on that forum and they are extemely helpful. Most of the new issues there are usually when someone is modding something and it messes up. So far there has been minimal major issues there the last 5 years. There are several former Tacoma owners that are Frontier owners too.

The engine nor the transmission were water down. They were designed/redefine to perform to the over all owner of a Tacoma. Majority of the owners dont tow more than 5000 lbs and when they do its not often. Toyota designed a truck that allowed a tow capacity of 6800 lbs if needed but I dont see the over all tacoma buyer getting a tacoma to just tow or haul. If you are worried about performing truck duty then get a full size truck for which it was designed to do. The tacoma is marketed as a off road capability vehicle for the person that likes to do out doors activities. You dont see toyota putting out videos of it pulling the space shuttle or its payload capacity. For the engine size ford F-150 runs 3.5L in all their full size trucks now just boosted.

If you are going to compare the frontier and tacoma there a few youtube videos with the frontier, colorado and tacoma that shows each weakness and strengths. If you really want a work truck why not consider a 2.8L diesel colorado?

The water down feel of the engine and transmission is the Atkinson cycle of the peddle stroke. How else do you program the engine to stay in the cycle besides controlling portion of the peddle stroke to keep it in the fuel economy sweet spot?

Because I've been a Toyota owner for years with my 2007 FJ Cruiser and 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser. I know what is like owning well built Toyotas that I can thrash on. There were no issues with my 2007 FJ except a wheel bearing issue at 80,000 miles. My 12 year old Land Cruiser only needed a gas cap replaced last year after the old one started making it throw codes.

I'm still here as a reminder that Toyota's glory days are in the past. Don't settle for the crap that Toyota of North America puts out now when I know they can produce a way better truck than the 3rd gen.
