That is for combined weight. Regardless if it’s personal or commercial. Only time it isn’t considered is if you’re towing an RV. Because the mto website is very vague, I went to the weigh scales and spoke to an mto officer. You can get big fines if towing improperly or overweight.

Your GVWR is the weight of everything resting on your truck's 4 tires. This includes the truck, you, family, friends, all fluids, your lift kit, your weight distributing hitch, tongue weight...

Often times published curb weight + payload won't add up to GVWR. If you take your truck to the scales it'll weigh a couple hundred pounds more than the published curb weight + your weight.

Are there videos that show how to install a trailer brake control? I have a 2017 DCSB TRD with AT. We are towing a 3100 lb. 19 ft. TT 1,500 miles round trip in a month. Oklahoma to south Texas. I have a WDH. I towed the trailer from eastern Oklahoma to Oklahoma City without the brake controller and it did just fine. Going to sell the TT after the trip.

All you need is the brake controller and an inexpensive harness. The truck is pre wired if it has the towing package. You'll have to remove the driver side kick panel to find where to plug the harness. I don't want to sound like that guy, but I searched to find the information and pictures.

Thanks fbd03taco. I have a brake control attached to a GM connector. Hope I can remember how I wired that.

If you go to a trailer place where they sell brake controllers, they may also sell the wire leads that are specific to your truck so everything will just plug in. When digging into the wires under the panel in your truck, make sure it’s the right one as there are a couple of plugs in there. Find the one that matches your truck specific lead. Good luck!

Not to take away from the thread but it is only for commercial vehicles and it is the truck GVW rating and not combined. Here is the link to the MTO site where it gives you the exemptions for a CVOR.

    www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/trucks/commercial-vehicle-operators-registration.shtml

Here is the blurb specific to what I was talking about. Until recently I was one of those enforcement officers you are talking about.

"Operators that don't need a CVOR certificate
Carriers that operate certain types of vehicles do not need a CVOR certificate. These vehicles include:
    pickup trucks that:

    • have a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of 6,000 kg (13,227 lb)
    • are being used for personal purposes without compensation
    • are fitted with either the original, unmodified box installed by the manufacturer, or an unmodified replacement box that duplicates the one installed by the manufacturer
    • are not carrying or towing a trailer carrying commercial cargo or tools, or equipment of any type normally used for commercial purposes"

Shouldn't be any actual wiring required on the Tacoma. Just plug and play once you find the connector behind the kick panel.

Thanks! So am I still Limited the wt on my ownership? The max weight that I could get without a CVOR was 4500kg

So I’m towing a Jeep on a dolly from NY to TN in March and had a few questions. It’s an 18 trd off road dbl cab long bed says it’s rated for 6,400 lbs. Jeep says it’s 3,100 plus it’s got some heavy duty axles and armor so my friend and I estimate about 3,800. He will be putting stock size wheels and tires and putting his 33” MTR mud terrains in my bed. I will also be putting my dirt bike in the back for the trip to Tennessee. U-Haul says the dolly weighs 750lbs so by my calculations I’m under the weight on a bone stock truck (for now). Will I be riding on the bump stops with the tongue weight from trailer and tires/bike in the bed? Also, the dolly doesn’t have brakes in fact most don’t. Should I be concerned?

It's not going to be fun but it sounds like you should be okay based on your calculations

Anything over 3000 lbs towing without some kind of brakes is going to be... normally we give ourselves enough time to stop and we’re aware of our load. It’s the unexpected jackass who stops or pulls in front of you. You could be liable if something like that happens. It’s a really long trip through big hills too!

I dolly towed a 2006 corolla (2500-2700bs plus dolly) 800 ish miles with no issue. The car was packed full of stuff in addition to 2 passengers and a truck bed full of stuff. No issues here. Take your time and anticipate stupidity ahead of you and you’ll be fine.

If you are using a dolly, tongue weight won’t really be a concern. If you were using a car trailer you’d get some squat but the dolly the weight sits right on the axel, not the receiver.

No worries. Correct, what ever the GVWR is for your truck on the ownership. 4500 kg or less no CVOR required. My brother has a construction company with 25 trucks in the fleet and only 4 of them require a CVOR as they are over 4500kg.

    Doesn’t that 4500 kg include trailer w/load?

Sorry, yes it does. Trying to do something else while posting not a good thing. I should have stated RGW (Registered Gross Weight) which can include the trailer. Going from memory here but generally the weight of a towed trailer and its load are added to the RGW of the truck. The load would include driver, passengers, fuel, equipment, tools, cargo, equipment, etc. carried in the truck and trailer. However light trailers that transmit to the highway a total weight of 2,800 kilograms (6,173 lb.) or less are not included in determining registered gross weight but the tongue weight of the trailer would need to be included in the truck weight. If you weigh all of this and it still works out to 4500 kg or less no CVOR. Hope this helps and makes sense gov't speak can definitely get confusing.

If you search the MTO site they tell you how to determine how much a truck should be registered for and have diagrams. At least they did when I was there, I have been gone for just over a year now. You can search at that link that I included.

Happened to me with the '12 OR. But the crazy rock came from the opposite lane of the freeway. I had safelight come and repair the windshield. Asked Farmers Ins. if the cost could be covered. They said yes. They paid for the job plus the house call. Nice to get a little back. I'd go that route.
