He had it mounted to the front bed mounts and then made his own brackets going to the rear. He also had this setup on his previous 2013 Taco apparently.

600lb pin and sub 4k total.

I would be a little worried about cracking the composite bed.

I tow a scamp with my 2017 SR5 4X4. The Tacoma handles it well, but I wish the V6 had better torque at lower RPM's... I've been debating switching to 4.88 gearing...

When I bought the Scamp, I got the custom goose neck with it. The PO used it in a 2004 Tundra. I made a set of rails for it that are held in place by longer bed bolts.

That's awesome! I'd love to get a similar setup some day. Have you considered trying to get a tune before going for full re-gear? I've heard some of them help in the lower RPMs and that would probably be much cheaper than the re-gear.

I haven't looked into tunes to help with towing. Thanks. I'll do some searching...

Do you have a WDH? My 4700k TT makes me sag about 0.5 inch. Front and back.

Hi Paul, I briefly DM’d you last year about tunes whilst in WA. We’re now 3,000 miles down the road in Santa Fe, the truck has done great. I’m sure power lower down would help but I can cruise 55/60 in 5th on the flat as is.

Trying to decide the next location. We are literally at a crossroads… North, East, or West.

In December I moved from Washington to Oklahoma. Over multiple mountain ranges with snow towing a car trailer with a BMW on it. The bmw was full of stuff, the truck bed and back seat were both full. I do have a KDmax tune. The truck did great. Dropped down to about 55mph a few times, but I wasn't pushing it too hard either. Averaged about 12 mpg.

Only pic I have. I recently bought a 16' car hauler with wood deck that I have been towing stuff with for the house remodel.

I shouldn’t say this but. The west is great. In Spokane we are 8 hours or less to Yellowstone, Glacier, the beaches Provincial parks. Etc.

My late father in law lived in Spokane, I remember having one too many at a winery on a hill :)

Spokane is probably the one place in WA I could live, because of the outdoors and weather!

Thanks for the link. I searched that thread for towing references and the people that tow with that tune seem to really like it. I'll have to read more of the thread before I make a decision.

Does the ECT button still perform the same function with the tune?

My experience towing my with 2020 TRDOR. I am towing a 2022 Micro Minnie 2100BH, advertised dry weight of 3850lbs (I have seen it advertised as high as 4088lbs depending on options) with a tongue weight of 468lbs. I have a Curt 6k lb. WD hitch and Timbren SES bump stops. I also have a CVC tune and I am running the Redarc tow pro elite brake controller. Additional payload weight comes from the Leitner Designs forged ACS rack system which weighs in at 85lbs plus the accessories on the rack for ab additional 100lbs. I don't generally load anything in them when I'm towing the trailer. My trailer sits pretty high so I am also running a taller shank to allow the trailer to sit level. Squat on the rear of the truck with the WD hitch and Timbren SES is minimal.

So far I have been pleasantly surprised with the towing experience. I keep ECT on in 4th, dropping to 3rd to keep speed up on longer grades. RPM's stay around 2300 at 55-60mph in S4 and run up to 3500-4000 rpm in 3rd while pulling grades at 55-60 MPH. I have not checked trans temps yet but so far I have kept my trips in the valley and lower foothills. MPG suffer as expected, I averaged 9.9 on my last round trip. Brakes work just fine, I feel confident in my ability to stop and I don't rush anywhere I am going. Speed limit in CA with a trailer is 55mph anyway.

In the future, I may re-gear to 4.88's, and depending on trans temps upgrade trans cooler. I wouldn't feel comfortable towing much more, I feel with this set up I can load the trailer with my desired gear, truck with passengers, and still feel confident on the road. I have more trips planned, some further away and some significant elevation changes included and I am eager to see how the performance may differ. The Tacoma definitely wasn't made to be an every day tow vehicle, but for my needs it has suited me just fine so far.

Ahh, ok, I think I would prefer the Spokane riverside beach I remember being on whilst I was there on one of our visits. We went down through OR & CA on the 101 during Dec & Jan. Very cold and wet.

What does your weights decal say on the side of the TT. My TT advertised is 3,800lb but delivered weight was over 4,100lb without the batteries. Tongue weight advertised 467 actual 580 with batteries.

Have you taken your rig across scales yet when fully loaded?

I strongly recommend getting OBD fusion so you can watch when the TC is locked. The >2020 taco manual doesn’t say anything about using ECT s4. Pinning the thermostat makes a huge difference when towing, I typically use S5 and down shift to 4 when tc is no longer locked or temps get above 200. My avg mpg has gone up from 9/10 to 13/14.
