When the first V8 (4.7L) was offered in the gen 1 Tundra it had 245 hp and 315 lb-ft of torque. The new Tacoma (2.4L) is 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque.

I think the highway MPG was rated at 13 city 16 highway on the 4.7L as well. New Tacoma is rated at 24 mpg highway (yes I know that usually means less in real world applications but still a huge improvement).

Kinda crazy you are getting more power with roughly half the displacement of that old V8. I know that V8 is legendary for reliability and the 2.4 liter is not yet proven long term but I doubt Toyota would commit to 8 year design cycles on a motor that is trash (also used in a ton of other models).

I know the prices are insane and out of reach for a growing number of people but still impressive how the technology has evolved EVEN with the government mandates we all love so dearly.

It’s actually pretty amazing. I often think what people from 50 years ago would think of today’s modern vehicles. Yes expensive. But also impressive.

How do the power bands compare? Specifically, where is peak torque?

My 3rd Gen has a little HP, but you gotta wind it up like a Honda S2000!

Peak torque (if I remember correctly) is at 1700 rpm’s!

    it feels great!

Ooohhh yeah. To me, torque is like a firearm, I have no interest in “hunting” for it.

Expense is relative. Minimum wage in some states is $20. Back in the day it was $2

Absolutely. I see people complaining about the price of a new Tacoma. It’s the price it is. I was fine and prepared for it from the time I bought my 16. Everything cost more. I wanted a premium. I saved for it and put a big chunk down to have the payments I wanted.

well, since I’m qualified to answer, I hate todays cars..lol

I wanna cruise up and down the strip in a 1980’s Silverado with a fat chrome Roll Bar, sucking down Road Sodas and tossing the empties in the bed out the drivers window hookshot style because no one gave two shits about a rear sliding window, with my upgraded Pioneer sound system cranking Van Halen, yelling completely inappropriate comments to the hotties on the strip….and when I roll by, everyone will see my bumper sticker that says….

Hahahaha. Sounds less about the cars/trucks and more about the “times” and how they have changed!

And? That is completely normal for today's auto market. The internals on the 2.4 are different than other applications and are built for truck duty. The 3.5 in your Tacoma is from a Camry.
