I have a 2017 w the jbl crappy system. I’d like to start by just replacing speakers. Question….I’ve found decent amount good front door speakers and subs Under 3ohms. (Wanting to keep head unit and stock JBL amp). There’s seems to be a lack of quality sub 3ohm speakers for the rear doors. The ones I’ve found have less than favorable reviews. Some direction would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

Best suggestion is to get whatever aftermarket door speakers you want and pair it with an amplifier and LOC to retain your OEM head unit.

I’m sure there are posts on this…but for simplicity, are there “plug n play” type amps that won’t require me to completely disassemble my car, ie retain the sub enclosure and location? I’m good w taking out the seats. But man…I’ve read some builds here that have taken days on end to finish. Makes me want drink just reading how complex it can be.

Not the cheapest option in the world but plug n play for sure.

Yeah the OEM Audio option is the easiest. Still requires taking off all the door panels and taking out the back seat and back plastic panels, but it’s as plug-play as it gets.

for less money but more work, you can build a better system. Like all truck projects, just depends on what your time and effort is worth

Stopped a very reputable audio shop in town for a quote. He's not a budget shop and is OCD with his work. The guy told me that it would be a tad bit less money to install a new head unit then have to tap in to the stock JBL head unit and connect all new speakers to a new amp etc. He said I was better off with the non JBL stock stereo if I planned to upgrade. He told me it's a 2 day project with includes sound deadening interior and custom sub enclosure. Price out the door was $3000. Equipment will be Alpine R series speakers/tweeters/amp, Alpine head unit, RF 10" sub in a new enclosure. I brought up OEM Audio and he said the custom install is much better though OEM is a very good product. He said as I've read here...your capabilities are only as good as you head unit and amp. Option 2: I can spend $500+ on new Infinity Kappa speakers, a RF sub and do a quasi plug and play myself with the given adapters. I have some decisions to make...which might include having to work some overtime!

If he said it would be less money to replace the head unit than to use the stock head unit, and he does not know about the AmpPro or the DSR1 options.

Given your expertise, is $3k a fair price for the equipment and install listed? Or is it too much?

    If he’s doing
-R series 6x9 components up front
-R series 6.5 coaxials in the back
    -R series 4ch
    -R series monoblock
-RF shallow sub with “custom” enclosure

those 5 products are 2 grand alone.

Then add in 2 days of labor (typically billed as 8 hour days,) overpriced power wire, speaker wire, and RCA’s, sound deadening material, speaker brackets, and all the other stuff that goes into an install. If he is a good shop, his labor alone is $100+ per hour, so I have no idea how he quoted you $3,000 for all that AND a head unit?!?!

I don’t know how. The numbers don’t make sense. Did he give you a written quote?

No this was verbal and was at the beginning of the conversation. I asked for a couple different quotes. One with the head unit and one without using the AmpPro…which he was familiar with. Still waiting on those emails. Keep u posted on the actual prices.

Yeah just in core product and an amp pro, you’re over 2 grand. Spend another $200 in wiring, $100 in cheap sound deadening (or $500+ on the name-brand stuff,) $100 on brackets and misc hardware. You could find a way to spend 3 grand just in product and materials if you’re actually doing it OCD. Then an average shop rate of $100/hr for 16 hours, putting you at $1600 in labor. You’ll spend another thousand on any head unit worth having for more than a year or two, after all the parts and wiring. Even more if you go for one of the new larger screen options.

I definitely want to see his quote because it seems too good to be true lol

That’s pretty close to what I had in mind. I don’t think it’s a bad price at all. I don’t like paying for labor, but I’m also MECP certified and did it professionally for years

Labor on the $3600 quote was just shy or $1k

Labor on the $4500 quote was about $1200

Interestingly the highest labor charge on both quotes was the dual amp installation
