I got my big boy pants on. And my mom knows better than to come down into the basement, especially when I'm internetting.

My point is that I didn't care for the 2.7L in the 2nd generation much and it doesn't off anything to most people over the V6. It's a tough little engine for sure, but offroad I find it very under powered once larger tires, armor, and other gear is thrown on. I'd rather not have to go to an extreme +5 gear ratio just to get a tolerable drive out of my truck. Is it a usable engine offroad? Sure. Much like a 4 banger jeep though you are going to be asking for everything that tiny motor has on every climb, and that gets annoying fast for most people.

Why would someone want to swap in a manual 5 speed on an under powered engine over running a V6 6 speed? You act like you know this V6 engine will be weak but, to be honest, that's based off nothing but your van motor comments and the similar displacement to the 2 GR. From the diagrams posted this engine has a lot of little tweaks to it and, knowing Toyota, it will likely be more than tough enough for the application. I don't need a motor to sit in a Land Cruiser for a few years before I can say anything nice about it. Any comments saying you can compare the V6 and I4 reliability are just horse shit until we see both engines around in the 3rd generation truck for a few years.

Around my offroad club almost no one wants a manual anymore. In fact, the last run I did was the first run where manuals outnumbered automatics and the only reason that was the case was because it was a Tacoma only run. The DCSB only comes in manual here, so anyone who wants the shorter more capable wheelbase with a full cab has to get a manual. TBH both of those people mentioned they hoped the next Tacoma came with an automatic DCSB option up here because they weren't fans of their 6 speeds. With automatics with gear selection the torque converter acts as a nice buffer when you need to stop on an uphill. No stalling in a bad spot and doing a WTF clutch burning maneuver to get out. You can be the best manual driver in the world and have very little to offer over a new style automatic offroad. BTW, that's no insult to those who want the challenge or feeling of a manual. To each their own.

Crawl boxes can be modified onto just about whatever transmission you want. Besides, most guys don't run a crawl box unless they are building a dedicated rock crawler. I don't think this 3rd generation truck will be used much as a dedicated rock crawler.

Just my thoughts. I'll let you go back to your own world now because you won't read this all anyways.

You can get a 3rd gen 4x4 2TR with the 5 speed manual. Theoretically. They're going to be more rare and less popular than they were in the 2nd gen. But it's on the config sheet.

The 2.7l was originally engineered for a minivan, gets shit mileage, and I am currently fixing things at only 167,000 miles.

It's just the trademark for Toyota's 4WD part time system. IE it will have the same 2H, 4H, and 4L settings you are used to on a truck. No AWD or Auto 4 setting.

I was in the same boat but got a 15. I don't like to buy the first few years of a redesign so that the company can work out the kinks over the years
