And that guy has been foul mouthed, disrespectful to other members as well as veterans and just all around rude in his comments. All sorts of people here. I don't b*tch, I point out the obvious or give an opinion.

When they make a "new generation" truck is it all about body styling or does someone decide there's a better engine to go in it, too? Maybe it's all about marketing?

I just wish the prices weren't so high. My first truck was a Dodge back in 1990. Paid $17K for it. Now... looking at the 2015 Tacoma... sheesshhh, at least $30K.

I'm shopping for a Tacoma right now. No rush. The RAV4 works just fine... but I get frustrated with sorting out all the packages. So in terms of the latest generation truck... does it really do anything more for me than the older ones? Or does it just jack up the price?

I guess having hit age 50... I'm finally at a place of thinking... maybe new isn't always better. But I'm also not much of a mechanic beyond basic stuff... shoot, can't even see the spark plugs anymore in these new cars. In my old Dodge... sure I had to climb into the engine compartment to reach the darn things (I'm a little short on one end... so my dad used to say)... but at least I knew where the spark plugs were.

So... new generation truck, to me, means warranty... hopefully a sound engine and body. Older generation truck... cheaper... but what will I be facing maintenance-wise? My nine year old RAV has been great... no mnx issues ever. Just the periodic safety recall fixes, but never left on the side of the road stuff. So in those terms... maybe a two or three year old Tacoma with good records would be a fine truck for me?

There's my two cents on a Sunday afternoon.

Given this I would not hesitate getting a 2nd gen (2005-2015) truck, yes the price is absurd but as are most things these days, but midsize trucks especially. As far as maintenance, these trucks are fairly easy to work on, I can easily do my spark plugs, belts, pulleys, oil changes, diff fluids, driveshaft, etc. Not so sure the same can be said about the new engine, we will see. Part of the reason I got my 15, I love these trucks, love the ease of working on them, the dependability and simplicity. New and more isn't always better.

I don't think anything is wrong with the current 2nd gens. As much as I like the redesign I will be keeping mine for quite some time because nothing is wrong with it and I believe it is as tough as they come. If this truck ever left me on the side of the road I would be surprised. As for buying new vs used I think it really depends on your current needs/wants.
Have you been itching and saving up to treat yourself to a fancy new truck? Or would it be an impulse thing?
Do you need the features a new truck offers or do you just need what the second gen offers?
IMO if there is something you need done that the current gen can't do, you may need a completely different type of vehicle. The redesign is just a refresh and option for those buying new. Buying new trucks isn't all that bad if you can get dealer 0% APR. That probably saves a lot right there.

But you're a lot older than me so you probably know all that and more.

    Edit:
If I were to buy a second gen (let's pretend I didn't have one already) I would not be buying a 12-15 I don't think unless I got offered an awesome deal. Reason being they have not changed mechanically since 2005 save for a few changes like engine mounts in 07 and switching from mechanical LSD to electric in 09 along with traction control features.
If I were going to buy anything close to a '15 I would just get the '16. The only benefit I see of the newer 2nd gens is less miles that you didn't put on there.

    The better coast
The problem is...Toyota made the new Tacoma still look like a truck. The old Tacoma looked like a truck so obviously Toyota didn't change anything. WTF Toyota.

Only benefit? How about a new 2nd gen with 0 miles, 0 frame rust, all the tweaks/changes worked out that will last another 15 years. Not to mention the 16, all new model which needs to be tested/proven and will inevitably have a price increase. There are still plenty of good reasons to buy a 15 over a 16 or used 2nd gen.

Ouch! COS has hit 50 and I'm looking 60 in the rear view mirror. Boy, talk about making someone feel old...COS, I'll grab him and you can smack him with a rusty 1st gen frame rail.

Hahaha! BK, I know. Whipper snappers, all of 'em. ;)

Don't have any frame rails handy, but I did find an old rusty fence t-bar in the surf a couple weeks ago. I could bap him upside the head with that.

Zach, wise counsel. I don't ever rush to buy the newest computers or other techy things off the shelf because of bugs. Same with a car if they've changed the product a bunch.

I've been looking at 2014 models I could find sitting on lots here and there around Oregon.

Now I just have to get over my girl issues surrounding color... and decide if I can just live with that God-awful red or maroonish color... or go white. I like the brown color, but dunno if it's possible to find the color I want... so again, have to decide on function needs vs. pretty.

You're making the same point I did. I said the benefit is less miles you didn't put on there. The reason we don't want miles is because of wear and tear. So I don't really see where you and I are disagreeing.

As for tweaks, if there are notable changes then I don't know about them. The frames are recalled anyway.
Hey now, I was just trying not to sound like a cocky know it all. Who am I, a 20 yr old who has never bought a vehicle, to give you advice? Just saying to take it with a grain of salt is all. :)

    I found a 2013 Limited already lifted with a canopy for 34,000. I got 24,000 for my 2011.

A new 2016 Limited would be very nice but is around 43,000 new.

I thought it was better for my house savings fund to spend $10,000 on a 2 year old model than over $20,000 for a 2016. An extra $10,000 in downpayment on a house is never a bad thing.

43000? They start at 21000 you would have to add some serious options to reach 43000.

Well, i was just kidding, but I'm going to keep an eye on you. Should be easy to do. After all, we're both in Texas, so you should be easy to find. I mean how many 07 DCSBs can there be down here?

I'm with ya.......Older and don't feel like doing the maintenance anymore. Been doing it all along. I can't do tire rotations because I have trouble lifting the tires (husband helps me ;).

You've never owned a tacoma before - so you could go either way (2nd or 3rd). Used Tacomas are great (high resale value) - but for a few thousand dollars more, you could get a new one with a warranty. If you keep your eyes on the market (so to speak), you could probably pickup a 2015 while the dealers are trying to clean the lots of the 2nd gens. The only downside, your selection will be limited.

For me....I've had my 2007 for 8 years. I'm ready for a new truck. I'm not going to buy a 'new' version of the same truck I've had. I'm excited for the 3rd gens regardless of what Toyota has made of it. It'll be a FAR improvement of what I have now and I've always been a Toyota fan.

Good Luck with your truck shopping!
