So let me give a little background. I purchased a set of the fx wheels from dustin a couple weeks ago. Once they came in, i went and put a set of general grabber atx tires on them. size 265/70/17. loved the look of the wheels and tires and was really impressed.drove and handled great.. well that didn't last long. had them put on, on a friday and on sunday, one of the belts on the sidewall broke and a section about 4 inches long blew out over the wheel. of course, i got a flat immediately, luckily i was able to pull over without damaging the wheel. so i limped back to the tire shop and they were dumbfounded, said they've never seen that happen like that before. they got me a new one no questions asked. fast forward to today. came to a stop sign and pulled out and it happened again. thankfully i wasn't up to speed and was able to pull over and put the spare back on. back to the tireshop, i told them i was done with general tires. i decided to put a set of goodyears on it.. just wanted to put this out there in case anyone was looking at the generals. i don't know if i just got a bad batch or what but be careful. i can't imagine what would've happened if i was on the interstate doing 70..

Damn, that’s lucky you weren’t hurt but unlucky about the tires. My brother has Grabbers on his Jeep. I’ll have to let him know.

Just curious, did it blow out in the same spot on the vehicle both times?

it did do the same thing twice but it was different wheels.. what they told me was a belt in the sidewall broke or got weak somehow and that allowed about 4 inches of the tire to blow out over the wheel.. you can actually see a low spot on the tire where it became weak and blew out..

That's insane. Hope they comp'd you for the new set of tires. It's sad because General is one of the handful of companies that makes some of their tires in the US - hope it was just a small batch.

Actually, only some of General tires are made in the US. Many are made in Mexico and Brazil. Goodyear and Cooper are the only remaining US owned and (mostly) manufactured tire companies, and even they outsource some production to China.

I’m having them switch them out for some Goodyear’s. The pricing was close to the same. They said not worry about anything that they wanted to make it right. Maybe they will detail it or something. Lol

Glad they tried to make it right. I don't think any company makes all of their tires here anymore, but I try to buy tires that were made in the USA. I just put general x3's on one of my vehicles specifically because they were made here. It's not easy for those companies to stay competitive with prices when the other guys use foreign labor - but I'll support them what litte I can.

Thumbs up for goodyear - they employ a lot of American workers.

Crazy! What load were they? I was getting ready to order a set but I'm having second thoughts after seeing this.

I've running ATX with no issues besides how much weight they need to balance out (and constantly need rebalancing), had AT2s before these and put 50k on em. For both sets I've bought, one was so out of spec that it couldnt balance and had to be replaced, so I think I can agree their quality control isnt great. I'll probably look at other brands when it comes time to replace these.

pretty interesting story I was looking at getting the General Grabber HTS60 tires, and I also was reading some reviewers saying that they constantly needed to be rebalanced.

that's for that input into General tires, I am starting to think twice about getting them, I guess the best bet is to get the higher priced MICHELINS , ive never learned my lesson yet, u get what u pay for.

i didn't really want to post my info to deter anyone from buying general tires. i just wanted everyone to know and be aware of what happened. it sucks really cause the tires initially seemed good.. i just really hope it was a fluke thing from maybe a bad batch or whatever. i picked up the truck this morning and had goodyear terrain runner tires put on. i went with the SL and they seem good so far. Not too loud but have a better look than the toyo tires they replaced. time will tell i guess.

Did you get the standard load or LT E rated tires? I'm looking to get a set of P265/70R17 AT/Xs, but I've noticed that size and load, in particular, is getting scarce. Out of stock at DTD, low stock at Tire Rack, and a few available on Amazon. I've been scouting these for months, and all of a sudden they started disappearing. Maybe you've uncovered the mystery.
