Sorry man we’ve been installing my buddies lift all day! Haven’t picked a camping spot for Saturday night yet! I’ll update the thread when I figure it out haha. Most likely it will be somewhere up in TN in the loop!

When it comes to comms, I would highly recommend the handheld units. The range is plenty good and you don't have to worry about running the power cable or coax; nor do you have to worry about antenna mount or radio placement. Just make sure it has charge, stick it in the cup holder and go.

I’ve been putting off buying any comms cuz I was worried the handhelds would be too weak. And I don’t want a hardwired setup if I can help it... But I think you’ve convinced me...

Girlfriend and I ran the traverse last August and had a great time. Take a camera there’s plenty of photo opportunities. So many amazing waterfalls. Stock trucks should be more than fine. One mud hole that made me a bit nervous being solo, a couple shallow water crossings a fun but easy climb or two and one downhill section that went on forever that made me feel sorry for my brakes. Used 4x4 on the trail because I could not because I needed to. It’s a lot of groomed fs roads connected by stretches of pavement. Have fun guys!

Pretty much this conversation. I wanted a radio that I could have PA function by adding a speaker under the hood, add an external speaker in the cab somewhere and also pick up the NOAA signal. Enter the Midland CB for ~$50. Oh, and it tucked in the center console like it was made to be there.

Then add $10-30 for an antenna mount. $20 for the coax cable and $20 for the antenna. You're looking at a minimum of $100 plus your time to mount everything, run the cables (make sure you get the right length coax and don't let it cross its own path), make sure you have a good ground on the antenna and either buy or borrow an SWR meter to tune everything. Oh, and make sure that you are in a wide open field to tune....no power lines or buildings around.

Suddenly, that $90 handheld is a lot more affordable and hassle free. Not to mention, you can take it in another truck if you decide to ride along or go for a hike.

I learned all this the hard way. I have the CB in the truck and if I could do it again, I'd just get a handheld.
