His sig says he has the 7900, but it's also dual band.

Damn just more money to spend...oh well it's worth it.

I'm surprised by the number and age of hams on here...

Never turn down a chance to learn. While I rarely play radio anymore, the knowledge and skills ham radio taught me over the years now keeps a roof over my head, food on the plate, and pays for this 2011 TRD O/R :D

The sad part is I just had to renew my license :pout:

Nice thing about the 8800 vs the 7900 is the ability to cross band repeat. So if you have to wander off trail you can set it on cross band repeat to an area repeater if you can reach one and then take a handheld with you and the truck radio will retransmit everything from your handheld out to the repeater. pretty cool.

Another option for drilling the roof is to have it done at the local comm shop that does the public safety vehicles in your city. I went down to the one that does all the local police vehicles and it was right around $50 for everything. That was the price of the mount, plus the labor to drill, run cable, terminate, and check SWR. If you price one of the purpose built 3/4" hole saws they're about the same price. Obviously a generic 3/4" hole saw is cheaper, but I dunno, the peace of mind that the guy who drilled the hole in my roof had done hundreds of them before that was worth the $50. They even guaranteed that it wouldn't leak.

There's should be a link in this thread where you can find a local test by you. They are almost every weekend.

Matt, About the testing, the guys that are work at the ham radio outlet by me are part of a club and they are authorized to give the test. He told ne to let him know when I wanted to test and I met up with him at one of his ham club meets and took the test there. So you may wanna check the ham radio outlet by you if there is one.

I'm testing for the license on May 28th... my plan now is to get the Yaesu FT8900R quad bander and a Comet UHV-6 (or maybe it was 4, can't remember) antenna. Mounting it to the bracket on the side of my toolbox.

Haven't ordered anything yet cause I want the license first!

Passed my license exam with a 100% score! That's what 3 weeks of studying does for you. Too bad I'm not this focused for all my bullshit college classes...

Waiting on the FCC for callsign!

What are some of the freq's being monitored in SoCal? Found a band plan on google but I think it might be a little old.
