So I'm finally planning to get rid of my old Taco and get a new one. I currently have an '03 PreRunner that I've had since late '02 and have put 106k miles on, and I want to upgrade to a 2005-2013 4WD model that will last me another 13+ years.

I've been looking at some certified pre-owned models at Toyota dealers and on Craigslist. Looks like I'm looking at around $25-30k for what I want, which is a gray 4-door short bed TRD 4WD with an automatic transmission. I would then add a small lift, maybe 3", and larger tires, as well as bolt-on fenders (I like how they look) and whatever other functional upgrades are recommended by members of the Tacoma community. I know that there are a million Tacomas out there with a similar setup but it doesn't matter to me, because this one will be mine. Also in my area there aren't a ton of lifted trucks, let alone Tacomas. So I will stand out at least a little bit.

Basically I just wanted to share this info with people who would actually care. If anyone has a gray Taco similar to what I described as my desired truck setup, post pics would you? I want to get ideas on wheel/tire/lift combos so I can start looking at prices.

    Thanks!

I'd personally look at new ones. '15s can probably be had with a nice discount right now and used Tacos always seem overpriced to me (good resale, I know).

    Either way, good luck!

Grab a 15. Not much higher than your budget to begin with. I just picked mine up Wednesday.

    Three words:

    New. Car. Smell!!

I just got a new TRD OR DCSB within your budget. Well... ok top end of your budget... but still....it's new.

I was in the same boat, I ended up getting a new 2015 DCSB TRD Offroad with 34 miles on it for $31k. The price was a tough pill to swallow, but, after looking for 3 months and seeing DCSB TRD's that were 5-7 years old with 85,000 miles going for $25K and up I decided it was best to buy new since I had to finance it anyway, and the monthly payment was less than $100 different. I am sure if I waited an extra month I could have gotten a slightly better deal, but after talking with all of the dealer ships, only one dealer didn't annoy me and they only had 1 left so I bought it from them.

When financing a used vehicle at the dealership I have learned to watch the interest rate and how it is compounded. Typically used vehicle interest rates and plans are such that when done paying them off they have charged you enough that you could have bought a new one with a better interest plan and rate.

Its honestly better to just get a new one, cost difference will be minimal.

Better hurry if considering a 2015. They will soon be replaced with the ugly and expensive 2016.

I have seen many situations wherein when the vehicle has been paid off a used vehicle has actually cost more than a new one due the interest rate and how it is compounded.

Agree with what everyone else is saying, I spent a long time looking at used trucks and ended up with a new 15 DCSB OR MT for just under 30k, even got a 0% interest rate. I'd at least look at and price a new one in your area.

If I were to finance it (which I probably would), I would get the loan through my CU, not the dealership. I can get a lot lower APR through my Credit Union.

Anyway I am currently watching a 2012 DCSB TRD in MGM with 35k miles for $26k...just gotta get my finances figured out and talk about it with the wife.

I got my financing through toyota and they got me a 3% APR vs my CU %3.9, it worth checking both out.

Thanks for the heads up! My CU is pretty badass though, they're the San Francisco Fire Credit Union and I've been with them my whole life, thanks to my dad's 30 years of service.

Plus if you're going to be paying about the same for a 2013 than you would for a 2015, you might as well start with dam near 0 miles and a full term warranty. As previously stated, I looked for a 2012-2014 for about three months and ended up getting a 15 for 32,700 plus tax and fees. Very happy I decided to buy new

    All good info, thanks guys.

I think a big problem I am having with the guys at the Toyota dealership is that they don't actually know much about the trucks themselves. I was talking about my '03 with the sales guy and I could see his eyes just gloss over. He started to try to sell me on the '16 and his first sales point was "you should get the 2016 because it has a cool 3-piece rear bumper." I said yeah but the 2016 is ugly as shit, and he was like "Oh, ok."
