Hey guys, new member here and need some advice on getting a Gen 2 tacoma. I'm a big BMW guy and on most of the bmw forums (mostly bimmerforums.com) under the same user name, so I'm not new to forums or working on cars. I plan on getting a reg cab, 4 cylinders 4x4, with manual trans (mostly so I still get good gas mileage) and it will be used as a daily driver in winter (maybe some light off roading).

First off, is there any gen 2 tacomas to avoid? It sounds like some of the new ones are more capable off road / in snow if you do the yellow wire mod, what year tacomas are those?

After trying to find a used one, it seems like I might be better off trying to afford a new one... One of the best deals in the area is a 2008 4cyl, 4x4 manual with 39k miles and they still want 18k for it, is that crazy or is it just me?

How much below MSRP are you guys paying for 2011 with a 4cyl, 4x4, manual reg cab (yes I saw that thread with what guys are paying for new ones, but all those are very well equipped)?

    Thanks for the help guys!

Any reason not to get a 2006 with 73k miles? They are looking to get 14K for it, but think they will go down to 11K. Any problems with getting a higher milage tacoma?

Thanks again for the help / advice... One more question, How well do these do off road? I plan on getting the Bilstein 5100 kit and 265-75-16 off road tires... Will that be a good setup in snow (up to 12" of powder) and for off roading? Do i need to put in a LSD or a locking rear end to do a average or easy trail?

Sorry for all the noob questions, this will be my first 4x4 / truck, lol

It will do just fine on the average trail w/o a locker or lsd. Just have to find the right line.

I'm also shopping for a new Tacoma double cab short bed off road. Trying to find out what a reasonable "out the door" price should be. The MSRP is 32,400. Thanks for any help.

For what it's worth, I just traded my 2006 4x4 with just over 100k on it. It was as tight as the day I bought it. Just had to get one with a 6 speed.:D
