That sounds like it hadn’t been registered and he owed backed fees. I only pay like $200 a year.

I honestly don’t have much of a problem wih the smog laws. There are some real shit boxes driving around. It may not be a problem for lower population states/cities, but the smog in LA and other big cities is fucking atrocious. I like clean air.

People complain about the smog laws, but unless you have a complete shitbox, it’s not hard to pass. My 86 4runner died on the stand from a faulty distributor, dude was like, “you’re good”.

It does make modding your engine a little harder, so there should be a sub category for that, but people get a little nuts. If you want to roll coal, it should be mandetory to pipe that shit straight into the cab.

Reg doesn’t have to be tied to smog either. You can do a non op. But if you want to drive it on the road, seems to me it makes sense it shouldn’t be a shitbox polluter.

My biggest grievance is that garages and dealerships, as in the places that get paid to fix your vehicle if it fails inspection, are allowed to conduct the inspections in Pennsylvania. In New Jersey, which has emissions testing but no safety inspection, the state runs the inspections stations and you either pass or fail; If you fail, you are given a grace period to bring your vehicle to a place that actually fixes vehicles and then it bring it back for another emissions test. In Pennsylvania, it's a huge conflict of interest, because I've heard stories of mechanics embellishing the truth about what a vehicle actually needs to pass inspection in order to make a profit.

Also in Pennsylvania, as long your emissions equipment hasn't been tampered with or removed, you're pretty much guaranteed to pass emissions as long the check engine light isn't on. What's a bit screwy in Pennsylvania is that you can pass an emissions with flying colors and still fail a safety inspection, as they're conducted at the same time but as two different tests, but if your check engine light is on you automatically fail both!

Yeah, that’s lame, CA specifically has “test only” stations for that reason.

The emmissions testing is corrupt, but at least not for that reason, lol.

It’s all about which company has paid the fees to the state to get their product “smog certified”. I can see the point of doing it, but it’s far too complicated and expensive of a process. So a small mom and pop shop that makes intake tubes or whatever cant really sell them here.

I'm one of those rare Pennsylvanians who actually takes care of their vehicle and takes note of everything it needs and does not need; At least once, when I was still taking my truck to the dealer to get inspected, I made it clear in an ever-so-subtle way that I would do an Oscar-worthy impression of the Incredible Hulk if they tried to say my truck needed anything to pass inspection!
