Hi guys! Been awhile, wanted to let you know that one dealership gave the all clear for frame inspection. They were not licensed to perform the undercoat, good thing, when I took to another dealer they found a hole in my frame.

It's safe for me to drive until they get the new frame in. I asked if the new frame would be undercoated they said no, it's made out of a different material.

I am very appreciative to Toyota, I lost my first Tacoma to rust, got the buy back. Looking forward to having my baby for a long long time.

    Hope everyone is well!
    Linda

My first was bought back for 1 and half X book - now they are replacing the frame on my second one like you. Do you have any idea what the "different material" is ??

Hi George! No but I will find more out tomorrow when I pick it up to drive until the new frame comes. I'm also curious as to what else they replace as I've seen brake lines, control arms. When I find out tomorrow I will let you know. We are kind of in this together LOL

Thanks. They ordered my frame - I was concerned that it wouldn't get in before the March dead line but was told I'm good to go when ever it gets in since the order was B 4 the dead line. Thanks for any info. They didn't learn anything from the 1st gen that rusted out to the 2nd gen that rusted out - hopefully the replacement is a little better.

Yes, you are good to go. You just have to have had it inspected before the deadline. I know there was talk about voiding the warranty by using rust proofing methods on our own. When I got my truck I bought POR 15 and got every nook and cranny.....they didn't even mention it.

Boy we have a lot in common ! After they bought back my 2000 I took the $$ and bought a 2008 - thinking whoever buys the frames at Toyota is a idiot I treated my 2008 - I thought I shot myself in the foot when they started the frame recall on 2nd gens because I didn't see any rust but the tech that checked it knew where to look - there was rust up between the muffler and frame where there was layers of steel sandwiched together - I didn't see it - so I'm getting a new frame.

Yes George!!! My neighbors were laughing at me called me the "rust natzi", no offense intended. But I'd be washing and waxing my truck, after the por 15 I was out there with my spray can of rust stopper. I am so glad that this other dealer found it when the first didn't. I had even done the mod I found on this forum, re routing the AC discharge so it was not dripping on my frame. I told them, thinking they were just going to spray to not remove it. The did not blink and eye. I have taken every precaution I could, and the way Toyota makes it right is the reason why my buy back money went to another Tacoma!

Well with all the work we both did you can't get away from the fact that you can't fix stupid so they just keep buying bad frames and Niel Young was and still is correct "Rust Never Sleeps" That being said I used the 2000 for free because they gave me 1 1/2 book and now I'm practically getting a new truck because of all the recalls on the 2008. I waited til I got a bunch of them. They did the leaf springs, seat belt springs, air bag light, accelerator peddle and I'm getting a new frame. They were very honest because I treated the frame every year and didn't see any rust or holes. They also got me an new accelerator peddle instead of butchering the old one. I couldn't be happier.

Yes! They stood by me when my first Taco got crushed, that is why I bought another. My understanding is that the rust is happening from inside out. Just like you, I am very interested in asking more questions about this new metal etc. I have to say that since I didn't need a rental and asked for a oil change in return, they did that. They were so awesome. Guess that makes me a taco for life.

Yes, and they did say if I wanted to purchase parts that are not included, they would install them for free, no labor. Just cost of parts, dealer supplied or not.

Oh, and I asked where the hole in my frame was located. The inner rail, front passenger side.

Now I'm trying to figure out what would be the smartest thing to replace while they have it tore down.

Do you have a 4 or a 6. Mine is a 4 - hole by muffler where it is close to frame. I bet you have a 6 and hole is where cat is close to frame. Did you find out if there is any difference between the old frame and the new except the lack of rust holes of course ? Looks like you are getting new brake lines and springs. I got new leaf springs already - the old ones are supposed to break - fly into the gas tank and burn the truck up - not a good thing.

My Taco is a 07. I can't get under it right now because of weather but one of the first things I did when I got my truck was re route the A/C discharge so that water was not dripping on the frame. I'm thinking that might be where the hole is since the previous owner did not make this simple mod.

And I have to give credit to this forum for making this simple mod.
