Hi guys, very new to this forum stuff so bear with me. I joined Tacoma World because I heard great stuff about how open you all can be, got to love that. So here is my question. I have owned my new 2019 Tacoma TRD 4x4 Offroad for 12 days now. After the first day of driving I started to notice at a consistent speed say 40-45mph the engine felt as though it was missing (ever so slightly) so off to the dealership I go. They ran their diagnostic and said all checked out and that it was the computer in the trans that needed to learn my driving habits. Any thoughts on that?

    Thanks,
    Z

They told me the same thing. Now at almost 12000 miles, the truck is definitely better. You basically have to break it in for the first 1000 miles or so and it should feel better then. That's what I did and it worked well imo

Crazy how that works, this is my first new truck in 20 years so I guess I have a lot of learning to do. Thanks

...and you are better off "driving it like you stole it". It runs better if you teach it some bad habits.

Don’t know about this one, but you do you. I’d rather not “beat” on the truck until after it’s first oil change.

You'd literally wait 10,000 miles to drive your truck hard?

I change every 5k miles. So yes, I didn’t redline till I changed the oil.

For what it's worth....when I was in the process of doing test drives, the sales manager said that I had to drive the truck that I was taking out pretty hard. It was a new truck that was on the lot. Less than ten miles on the odometer. I put almost 100 miles on that truck. Then I tested a second truck with minimal miles on the odometer and really got on it too. I just did what I was told to do. The truck I ended up buying had tree miles on the odometer. I watched it come off the transport. Drove it just as I normally drive. Rarely do I come close to redlining the truck. I will however put my foot to the floor and let the automatic transmission do what it's supposed to do.

    Stock and staying that way
Just drive it. People so overthink this. If it breaks, like actually breaks, take it in to the dealer.

Driving hard is relative I guess. I never redline mine and it's at 30k.

Mine is driving better since I bought the truck, so there is some truth to op question. My truck decided to hold gears longer and nothing was done at the dealership. I just drove mine like i stole it right from the beginning, now it is driving the way I like

Give that new ride a pop quiz, and take it off-road. Best wishes on the new truck. Welcome to the show.

Thanks everybody, I'll definitely have to keep driving it the way I want it to end up driving is what I'm getting out of this. So long as I don't red line (never intended to until at least 10k) Plan to change oil at 2k (first change), then again at 6k and then there after every 5k. She's going to be taking short daily trip back and forth to work and then longer trip on weekends which is why I intend to change oil at 5k intervals vs the factory recommended 10k. Which brings me to my second question, when do you all change your oil and with what brand? I hear Toyota oil is pretty good stuff but I'm also hearing great things about Ravenol Oil. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks

Yeah yeah, 6.5k miles on my 2019, at 3k it was still lugging around being a real sluggish donkey.

I changed my on oil because I couldn't stand it anymore then shortly after that I started experimenting with S5 but mostly the ECT button for about a week. Not racing it, just keeping up with traffic better. It was ok, the ECT button allowed a little more RPMs than I drive and after about a week & a half of playing with the buttons I got bored with them and started using redular old Drive again.
I don't know what lesson my truck learned but it drives & shifts WAY better now, I actually enjoy it! And it seems to be getting the exact same mileage, maybe even 1 mpg more now but with quicker red light to red light times.
WAY better, I was borderline on even wanting to keep my 2 year lease for almost 4k miles..
I was skeptical of this 'learning' crap but it's for real..

Thanks camillethetoy, I'll continue to drive it like I like to, sounds like eventually it will "learn" my habits and start acting like it supposed to.

Did that for six months. I am tired and a bit pissed off about having to mess with it. I'm back to using "D" for most of my driving and ECT 4 for towing. My next new mid-sized truck will be the first one that has a really good engine/transmission combination. Lots of things to like about the Gen 3 Tacoma but the constant searching for the right gear is not one of them.
