As I'm mentally preparing to start the process of a 4x4 conversion on a 2003 3.4l Xtracab Prerunner, I'm trying to get myself familiar with identifying compatible components, namely transmission/t-case. I've read through many of the existing threads here and just now starting my actual search process. I came across this post on marketplace (shoutout if the seller is on here). After looking through this thread, from what I can tell this t-case is an automatic (based on shifter shape and the obvious that it's mounted to an auto trans), electronic (non-j shift, due to actuator being present) ADD supported (based on sensors), multi-mode (based on second sensor on actuator) unit, that seemingly is likely from a 4runner (thread states multimode was only available to 4runner?). With that, im trying to confirm that this probably wouldn't be a great t-case candidate for me if I'm trying to keep it as simple and compatible as possible (Ideally I don't want to deal with ADD and would prefer jshift and manually locking hubs).

Moving onto the trans, it's an A340F, the only thing I'm not totally sure of is identifying if it's compatible with a 5VZ vs other engines. Is there a specific tell to look out for there with the bell housing or something? The bell housing looks the same as my A340E, but I'm not totally sure. Thanks much for the support, excited to be on this journey.

Looking at the bell housing from the front, if the opening for the starter is on the left, then it's out of a 6cyl. If it's on the right, then it's out of a 4cyl. 6cyl A340F pictured below - left side. 4cyl A340F on the right side.

As for the transfer case, you can still use it. This video explains how you would lock it into 4WD using a clamp. He says to use a ZIP TIE or a RUBBER CLAMP but if I were to do this I would use a clamp.

You also could keep ADD altogether and just wire in a switch to trip the actuator.

    Details in this thread.

Take a look here for a list of relevant threads and info related to the 2 to 4 swap. Should help with your conversion. Cheers.

Excellent info on the bell housing & actuator! Thanks a ton for that, I'll dig deeper into those resources.

If that's a multimode, I'm jelly. But it takes a whole other set of drive/propeller shafts IIRC, which must also come from a 4runner with multimode (AWD), which are by far the hardest setups to come by. There's one write-up I've seen on here of doing it to a 1st gen tacoma.

Yeah that's what I saw on the other thread as well, you'd need a specific drive shaft set up. I guess in the end I could also always sell the t case if I got this bundle and source a different j shift one, especially if other folks would be interested in a multimode one.
