You're lucky you didn't get popped for impersonating an officer with those.

It's federal law. Applies in all 50 states to private vehicles.

State laws vary on some colors, blue is permitted on state/city highway construction vehicles in some states, others allow green on private vehicles for volunteer fire, while other states reserve green for state/county forestry vehicles.

I asked is there a law or ordinance specified about what civilians can and can't use on their vehicles...His response" Cause I said so!!! Really???? I removed them just to appease the douche. Oh well, better safe then sorry....

Well, although that Cop was an ass...there are laws and rules against civilians running red or blue lights on the front of their vehicles...these colors are reserved for emergency personnel only

I'm not saying I like the lights there or saying its OK to have them, but its funny how everyone is giving op such a hard time but if he drove a Honda civic everyone would be like oh those are sick fuck the police keep em!

Op, if you like em, keep em. Who cares. But don't drive around with them on at night. Reserve them for off road events and parking lot meets and such

Nope... The Honda crowed these days are even more so against those kind of modifications.

I always find it funny and a pretty good sign that the people that say "fuck the police" are always the ones that will not admit fault... "I was going 130MPH through traffic drinking my beer and got pulled over! Fuck tha police!". Never had a problem with any law enforcement officer that was unjust.

I couldn't agree more. Just for the record I wasn't personally making that statement, in fact I'm in the process of becoming a cop right now. I was simply trying to make my point but maybe I over stereotyped a bit.

This may come as a surprise but guess what cops use things other than Fords that have blue lights many are drug seizures (Audi's, pickups etc.) they don't need look a likes running around with blue lights.

I live in Stafford too. I know they don't drop many tickets up here in NOVA, but some of the southern VA counties will do it.
My friend got pulled over in Chesterfield (south of Richmond) for going through a yellow/red light, and got his ticket dropped cause he showed up to court.

As memory serves there are no federal regulations on motor vehicles, as the states themselves are the ones who issue licenses and vehicle registration/tags. This leaves it up to the individual states to mandate what is and is not allowed. Of course I have yet to find ANY state that allows flashing red or blue lights on the front of the vehicle, or any flashing blue visible from the rear of a vehicle. (Flashing red is usually acceptable from the rear, if your hazards are on, since many vehicles do not have yellow turn/hazard lights on the rear) OP, I can see why you got cited for those blue lights. They are pretty prominent there.

While each state has it's individual laws on lighting, it is pretty much up to the police officer themselves on if they are willing to pull someone over and cite them. Heck I see people with illegal tint all the time, but they never seem to get tickets for it. Just depends on being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Interestingly enough, there are some people I bet here on TW who live in states like California who are running illegal headlights. Looks like state law says you are not allowed to install headlight bulbs that are brighter than factory. So all those HID conversions on Tacoma trucks are technically illegal in California. Of course has anyone gotten a ticket for headlights that are too bright? lol. I would doubt it.

I do agree with the majority here, OP, that you remove them, take pictures, and see if you can get the fine either eliminated or reduced. Never hurts to try.

    6 years......not bad. :)

I'm going to guess if blue is illegal where you live, then it doesn't matter if it's flashing or not...it's illegal.

If you had that lit up and drove past a LEO, you'd probably get pulled and ticketed, at least here in VA.

I will admit though, I have recently seen an uptick in Jeeps and Camaros with blue halos, and they don't seem to get pulled over. Or maybe they do and don't care :notsure:

As far as I know the blue light in New York State was reserved for volunteer fireman only. Somehow the police ended up using them too now. You received a "blue light card" from the chief of the department that allowed you to display one blue flashing light of no more than 50 candle power, visible from the front of the vehicle only, when responding to alarms, in your district only. Police could but rarely did question the blue light in this case unless you were being stupid with it. It was only a "courtesy light" anyway. I don't know how the law changed now but that is how it was when I had one. Volunteer EMS had green lights and law enforcement and fire chiefs had red,red/ white ect.

There seems to be no control over people having red lights in front, red back up lights, green lights in front, blinding headlights, blindingly bright tail lights. What happened to dot approved lighting and lenses and such?
