Hey y'all, I'm going to be ordering a set of RCI sliders very shortly. Question I had was, do I go with the powder coat option or should I go with rattle cans and do a few layers of primer before color. I do intend for these to get used on the trails. I'm new to tacomas and overlanding and trail driving so I'm certain my lines will make good use of the sliders. What are your thoughts and experience with either option?

    Cheers.

If you use your sliders even powder coat is gonna come off. I used rattle can bed liner on mine(after etching primer) and the tops are holding up great. I scratched the bottoms on some rocks and its a 15 minutes job to go sand and rattle can the scratch.

I opted to rattle can mine. I've only actually used them once and it left a good gash on one side..probably would of damaged the powder coating, so in that sense I was happy it was just a rattle can job BUT...my sliders do get beat up and paint chipped on the cross bars from road debris and rocks. That being said, I have to always repaint them to keep the rust away (i'll be honest I only repaint when they get rusty lol).

If you don't think you'll really bash them, I would powder coat them. I think the only reason not to powder coat them is because a rattle can wont "match" if you ever have to touch them up.

If you live in a place that uses salt on the road, or you plan on driving in a place that uses salt on the road I recommend the PC.

The rattle can shit is great for touch ups but in the corners deep under the truck rattle paint is a really shitty protectant. Spray paint will rub off as the salt and sand hits it just from driving down the road. Because you’ll never see the rust it will just keep growing.

That’s why I say have it properly coated and all you have to do is chase the easy to find scratches.
