So I have a 2012 tacoma with just the basic stock headunit, not the entune headunit. I want to get some subs but I know nothing about audio. If I want some subs, do I need to get a new headunit, subs, AND an amp? Or just an Amp and Subs? Also, what are some good choices that aren't too expensive. Thanks a bunch!

you can hook up the subs/amp with factory headunit, just need to splice into the speaker wire to get the signal to the amp.

Just a few little things. It's my DD
You will prob have to buy a box that turn your speaker wires into RCA jacks for you amp. But you can install a system with factory head unit but won't be the best sounding.

Little this. Little that 4x4 Swap’d PreRunner
You need what's called a Line Output Converter.
It splices into any speaker wires then converts it to RCA. These RCA's then go into your amp. It takes the speaker level input and bumps it up enough for the Amp to read and boost. From the Amp to the Sub, its just like any other system.
You'll need an amplifier wiring kit, amp, speaker wire, sub and a box. Then your good to go!

    Hope this helps.

I'd probably check out crutchfield.com they have a lot of info and products. and EXCELLENT customer service. I've ordered a lot of stuff from them simply because I like the way they do business

Too many to list. See build page. Link in signature
Please dont buy a "line output converter" because you will be wasting all your money. LOC's are very extremely cheap and do the job, but you get what you pay for! There are better ways of getting the signal to the amp.

I am an MECP certified install tech and have done thousands of systems. I also live in socal and do many installs for the local guys. Click link in my sig for more details. Feel free to PM me and we can discuss some options you have. The most important thing I need to know if I can help you pick the system that is best for you is your total MAX budget. PM me with that info on what your willing to spend, and we can figure out what your options are.

Agreed you're gonna kick yourself for not doing it right the first time. When you upgrade a stereo system it's better to replace it all. Factory headunits have crappy output frequencies to the speakers and stock speakers are crappy at picking up all the ranges that a new head unit would emit. Plus you want a sub but without a preamp output you have to ghetto rig it with shit like line output converters. At the very least get a new head unit along with the subs.
