I'm sure the iPad is easily removable, so he can still store it in a hidden place or take the iPad with him. It might not be as pretty as Soundman's mod, but I like it better because you can pivot/rotate the iPad screen vertically or horizontally, which I think is a necessary feature because of how the iPad was designed to operate.

As for the carputer comment, it's a lot more complicated to do that, and the multi-touch interface can never be as good as the iPad.

Someone appreciates it... Its all rough guys if you check my other post you will see im definitely not done with it... I still have to finish my center console piece where the headunit will mount this all just temp! At first i didnt like how bulky and how far the ipad stuck out... but i would rather it be this way so when i do pivot it and or pivot to passenger it is not out of reach to use!

Also sorry to the guy who started this thread didnt mean to hijack with my ghetto ass setup haha :)

And yes it is removable and i take it off everytime i get out of the car... I also have the option of not using it and can connect my iphone for music instead! :)

    Functional
I agree about the multi-touch, but I have wished I had multi-touch functionality in my setup. I can barely surf the web, talk on the phone, and eat a cheeseburger when I'm trying to drive, let alone mess with multi-touch.

Now that I think about it, look at your phone (because I'm looking at mine right now) and it is messy as sh*t because I was just playing angry birds at my desk. With multi-touch in the truck, after just a few hours of use the screen would look horrible, I am anal enough as it is about keeping my screen as clean as possible.

Why would you want to pay extra for multi touch? You don't need multi touch for a carputer. Heck, I've been fine without it for the past 5 years I've had my carputer (which will eventually make its way into my Taco if I can find the time). The software that is made for an in car environment is made for quick and simple navigation...just like current radio's (who have all been playing catch up with us). :)

I definitely agree that installing a carputer involves a lot more work than most are used to because of all the little components involved...but at least it's completely cheaper/customizable/and very future proof! :)

If you started 5 years ago, or even a year a go, there was no multi-touch option anyway. Mac OSX doesn't support multi-touch, nor does Linux, so only Windows 7 has multi-touch. And then a multi-touch capacitive touchscreen isn't available till this year for carputers. So your point is moot since multi-touch isn't an option whether you need it or not. :p

But in my personal experience, multi-touch is a much better user experience just by comparing my Garmin Nuvi and the iPhone/iPad. The Nuvi isn't multi-touch, and navigating the map on it isn't easy. While on the iPhone/iPad, scrolling and zooming is much easier and smoother.

As for paying more for multi-touch in a carputer, yes it can be expensive, and it's one of the reasons I haven't invest in a carputer yet. But for the iPad, you are not paying more, it comes with multi-touch and an iPad setup is much cheaper than a carputer when all is said and done.

Very well put... Although you could have a multi touch carputer for less then an Ipad.. I put one together for a friends car and he even wrote a book and i think it cost us less than 500 bux, even though i have the ipad... But as far as apps, navigation, user friendliness, there is nothing else out there that will compete. The screens resolution everything all in all.. an ipad makes for a great tool in a car. I will post a video of all the apps i use for once i order my blute tooth gps, and my kiwi wifi OBDII Sensor!!!

Sorry, but my point was not moot because you don't need an OS to support multi touch, you just need the hardware w/ drivers to work with whatever software you are using to control it.

Don't get me wrong, multi touch is nice for asome things. I am just saying that in a car environment, where the software controls are greatly simplified so your focus is minimized (so you can drive), it is not easier or harder and is therefor not needed.

In Garmin, it auto zooms based on speed which makes it fairly hands off the majority of the time. But if you want to change that zoom level, using one finger to press the plus or minus is just as easy as pinching. Sure it doesn't seem as cool, but it is just as easy. To pan around the map, you use one finger to press and drag across the screen the same as you do on a multi touch screen.

Honestly, you wont need much touching at all in the semi-near future. If you check out what the uber pioneer's of carputers are working on (and even the auto industry), you'll see that most are going to voice control...but right now, that requires a strong (expensive) computer, a GOOD mic, and no accent or children in the backseat. lol I also saw that one auto maker is working on gesture control...kind of like Xbox's new Kinetic thing. Combine the voice tech with the gesture tech and you don't really have to touch anything! :D

    Sorry, went way off course...

Anyways, most carputers don't need much to run well and can be built with only a couple hundred dollars. It'll be slow to start up, but it'll run just fine once it gets there. lol

The main thing that I like about the ipad is that it turns on instantly. But you still have to physically turn it on and open the app(s) that you want to run whereas a carputer turns itself on just like a regular radio. I don't doubt that someone will make a great in-car app that will make using the ipad just as good as some of the current stuff for a pc, but they are not there just yet.

The main thing is...if you already own an ipad, then why spend the extra money for a carputer when the ipad will definitely give you more than any stereo system can provide. :)
