My girlfriends 4 year old dalmatian Lucy is at the emergency vet. It appears that she has an autoimmune disease of some sort and her body is breaking down her own blood. The dog is being watched for the next 24 hours and is probably going to have to get a blood transfusion. I know she is only a dog but my GF has an extremely strong bond with her. Please keep her in your thoughts.

    Thanks

Thank you all. Just got word that her blood count dropped one point. 40 is normal, she was at 20 yesterday, this morning 12. They are waiting to see how she reacts to the drugs then running another blood test at 10. If she hasn't improved they are going ahead with the blood transfusion. I feel so bad for my girlfriend and for the dog and wish here was more I could do. My cat had a similar situation a few months ago but she was 18 years old so it was obvious that the better decision was to put her down. Lucy is only 4 and could live a much longer life! Thank you all for your prayers! God Bless!

Being as you are in AZ, I highly recomend taking it to the Animal Medical and Sugical center, if the condition doesnt improve, or for future visits. I truley belive they are the best Drs. in the US.

She had the blood transfusion last night from 10:30-12AM. They rechecked her blood at about 6AM and she is at the same level as just after the transfusion. Her blood level is still about half of what a normal dog should be but it looks like she is at least stable for now. They are going to continue treatment today and possibly do another transfusion. A dog her size would normally get 2 units in the transfusion and they only used one last night. Thank you all again for the thoughts and prayers.

aaaawwww man, this blows. I feel so bad for you guys. A dog is a family member and will treat you better than any human ever will. This situation sucks and I just hate to hear it. I love my dog Ginger sooo much. Good luck you guys. That's a rough one.

    Thanks Brian.

Update: So yesterday after the blood transfusion her red blood cells were at 17, then at noon yesterday they were up to 19 which is a good sign as when we first brought her in they were at 12, a normal dog should be at 40. She stayed at the vet all day and night again. At 6PM yesterday her count dropped to 16, then at Midnight it dropped to 14. This morning at 6AM her count was still at 14. The vet seems she is stabilizing and everything else seems good, breathing, heart rate, she is eating a little too. My girlfriend is going in around 9 to see what the deal is. She can't really afford much more so please keep praying for Lucy! Thanks!

Come on Lucy, you can do it! As rough at it is, just by psyically going to see her will at least help her mental state of mind, she has to be hating that place even though they're trying to help her. My fingers are crossed for her man.

We have gone to see her every day. The first day we went was just before the transfusion. She got out of the kennel and was so weak she could only stand for about a minute before the collapsed. Yesterday my girl went in the morning and she jumped out of the kennel and was very excited but ended up vomiting. We didn't want to cause any more undo stress last night so we stayed home. This morning to save money, she is going to bring the dog home for the day, watching her at home, still giving her the meds, and still getting blood test done at a normal vet.

Aww thats a bummer man sorry to hear about the pup. I hope she pulls through. Bonds with pets can be just as strong as with family. Hell, pets are family.

Took Lucy to the vet last night to get check and her blood count had raised by one point. Its not much but she is heading in the right direction. It looks like it is going to be a long road ahead of us but we are staying cautiously optimistic.

Thank you all again for your prayers and good thoughts.

Just a little FYI for y'all dog owners: NEVER LET YOUR DOG GET INTO RAISINS!! A dog's kidneys cannot process a certain enzyme found in raisins. My girlfriends dog almost had to go on doggy dialysis
