Okay, I don't wanna bash people here or their trucks... But what gives? I'm on vacation in Maui and have seen a lot of ghetto installations of lift kits and trucks with 6" or more of lift but using small tires. Not only small tires but also tires that are too narrow for their wheels making them having to stretch the installation of their tires. This doesn't make sense to me not does this have any benefit while offroading.

Biggest question for me is why are there so many ghetto lift kit installs here? I saw one where someone removed their struts and installed some torsion bar setup. Dunno how that makes sense. But, to make it worse, they left jagged metal on the frame where the strut towers we're originally mounted. What gives people?

They want to stand out! It's a different life style

I like the Hawaii Tacoma's, wide as possible tires on a 2WD that cruises 30mph on the coast to the beach. They'd look stupid anywhere else.

sometimes people install smaller tires to pass their safety check. We have to do those here every year and your headlights have to be a certain height. as far as ghetto lifts, lots of people want huge mall cruisers or pavement princesses. they do the cheapest lift they can. I have seen older solid axels using wood blocks to gain lift. to each his own i guess lol

I understand the style, to each their own. I have seen some really nice Tacoma's here with the wheels sticking out and stretched wheels on their tires. Not my cup of tea but still some clean rigs that people take pride in.

Haha, there's rednecks on the mainland that do some ghetto work on their trucks too. I am just kinda surprised at how many I see here. Maybe it's because every other vehicle on Maui is a Tacoma? BTW: I love seeing so many Tacomas here! I kept pointing out the Tacomas to my wife and after 5 minutes she had enough. I however did not and would smile when I see multiple Tacomas in a row driving down the road. I had to research it and found out that the Tacoma is the most popular vehicle in Hawaii.

I like how you start with "I don't want to bash people here or their trucks..." and your thread title is "Ghetto lifts" and go on to say "ghetto installations". Unless you didn't mean any disrespect or bashing with the term "ghetto".

Fair point. I don't like to talk trash on anyone. I can see how saying ghetto fits the criteria of trash talk. I just don't understand the amount of bad installs. Maybe a lack of options for reputable Fab shops?

Are you assuming that all Tacomas go offroad?

You know what they say when you assume?

This is honestly a perfect example of the type of cultural insensitivity that has led to the locals despising haoles, why did you feel the need to hop on TW and post this ? Didn't yo' mamma teach you " if you don't have anything nice to say then STFU ? I'm pretty sure the boys on the island didn't hop on Haolesrus.com when they saw you to bitch about your lack of tan, bad shirt and socks with your slips

    Like, so many.
There was a better way to say it, but it's an interesting topic in that certain isolated regions develop their own vehicular style. That's worth discussing.

I noticed the same thing when I was in Maui! Tacomas everywhere and all with small tires/wheels and huge lifts. That's the style down there, and they're great for making sure you don't get stuck in the sand.

"Cultural Insensitivity"? Well get down with your self righteousness then.

Really? Cultural insensitivity? Since when is a vehicle a part of ones culture? I'm pretty sure that people's culture would be fully intact without any vehicles involved.

This has nothing to do with whether or not a vehicle goes off-road. Seeing mangled metal that was half cut on a vehicle is shady work for an off-road rig or a low rider.
