This post isn’t like my regular posts but thought I’d mention it since a lot of the trucks in this thread have been supported by by “trusty” HF jack stands.

I’m sure by now you’ve seen the jack stand recall as well as the typical knee jerk reaction of people saying they’re never buying “cheap Chinese junk” again. Well I happen to like my cheap Chinese junk so I swapped out my old jack stands under the recall and got a set of the new ones that Harbor Freight is trading. After watching the video below I was comfortable knowing that the new jack stands were better than what I already have been using for years. So I went over and got me a new pair.

the one thing everyone should know is that HF gets a lot of their products from overseas suppliers and some of the name brands you know and trust are occasionally made in the same factories just labeled diffferent or painted a different color. One of the quirks of HF products is that they suffer from a sever lack of quality control so it’s always a good idea to give your new tools a once over before you trust them completely. With the above video in mind, I knew what to look for in the new set of stands.

Here’s a view of the pawl on the new stand. Notice that it isn’t exactly square in the hole.
    774DA683-F7B7-45AA-B436-BD95178D6585.jpg

After looking over the stand I immediately knew how to take it apart to remedy the situation. Knock this little roll pin out and it all comes apart. Try not to think too hard about how ultimately it’s a roll pin that is keeping the jack stand in place and your truck over your head.

Heres that little guy in my vise and the results after a few quick passes with my angle grinder. Followed by a comparison or stock vs modified.

By cleaning up and squaring the tooth on the pawl my though is that I now get full engagement of the ratcheting mechanism on the jack stand. Bench testing them afterwards, the jack stand feel a lot more secure. I have an install coming in soon so I’ll be able to report back how they held up. If you don’t hear from me then I’m stuck under a truck- send help.

Shout out to Sergio who helped with adding some outriggers to my bed bars. Exactly what I was looking for and I think they turned out great. He has great attention to detail, nice guy. Thanks brother, I'll definitely come back for more work.

Busy day today in the shop.

Sliders installed on a Sequoia. The owner came in as a referral from @SixthSnail . I always appreciate getting referrals because it means that you were happy enough with my work that you’re vouching for me to a third party. Thanks brother!

Also installed some true rock rails on @lamjam ’s clean truck. He wanted them to mainly serve as drop off protection so I used a 2x3 square main tube coming off the support legs from the frame. This keeps the rails tucked in and I can then angle them aggressively to protect the rocker panels. Some of my best looking welds are holding these to his frame- it’s a shame nobody will ever see them.

Something a little different today. Rock rails on a Ford Ranger. Referral from @lamjam and he basically said he wanted the same thing for his truck.
