Giving up on the stock stereo

I'm so very done with the stock stereo in my '17. I've done the firmware update and the unit still continues to just shut off and reboot. From day one, the navigation was awful to use, and now nothing works. It's time to pry some cash out of my icy grip and get something better.

What aftermarket systems have folks out there used to replace their stock stereos?

Most important, it needs to fit well. I'm looking for Bluetooth and Apple Car-Play.

 

I'm a fan of the Pioneer NEX systems. I think someone fit one into the stock opening completely flush, looked stock. I still run OEM, but I replaced the one in my wife's 4Runner so she could have Android Auto and use Google Maps on a bigger screen. With all the installation gear from Crutchfield (not cheap), she actually got more functionality than the stock HU -- it shows actual tire pressure and temp, not just an idiot light on the dash.

Factory NAV is lame on all vehicles, and no free updates on any marquee I know of.

You're doing yourself a favor here.

When I need NAV on my 5 lug and don't want to futz with the phone (and no co-pilot) I plop the old Garmin on the dash and mush on.

Also works well when flying somewhere and picking up a rental. Not interested in figuring out the rental NAV (if equipped) and while the phone is great, there's not always a signal. Yea yea, I know about downloading maps for such events. But I prefer to use my phone as a simple multi tool, not a full blown Swiss model.

 

More than just rental cars. If you must abandon the vehicle somewhere (I could have sworn FS425 was not THAT nasty!) and there is no cell coverage, it is *something*.

 

There are lots of aftermarket options, it just depends on how much you want to spend. Crutchfield is a good starting point.

 

Another vote for the Pioneer NEX head units. I installed a

Pioneer DMH-WC6600NEX and the fit looks damn near stock with no modification to the bezel. This unit has so many features plus wireless car play and Android auto.

Someone posted recently about a plug and play unit from a company that retains all the usual functions. It was within the last couple of weeks. I think it was around 1k.

 

Are you thinking about the units from Tril Grid Pro?

 

Well under $1k. For features, all I want is FM radio & Bluetooth connectivity to my iPhone (for calls and navigation). Apple Car Play would be nice but it's not a deal breaker. It would be great if the controls on the steering wheel worked with the new unit.

 

This looks like it would be your cheapest option and steering wheel controls are retained.

I went with this. Plus added a pair of 6x9 Kickers, and a pre wired harness. Total for everything was $589.

All my steering wheel controls work, and the back up camera. It comes with a dedicated USB, but the factory one worked for playing tunes from a flash drive.

Any chance you could post a picture of that unit installed in your Tacoma?

 

If you get something with CarPlay or AndroidAuto - use Waze for daily driving
And I've been using Gaia GPS for offroad, both support CarPlay and AndroidAuto
