I have been carrying a 27 for concealed carry everyday for 6 years, but I perfer to shoot my 23. If you decide to buy a 23(or any other Glock), buy a Wolff Guide Rod and Recoil Spring Kit for it, too. It will really help you with getting back on target, quickly.

Go with the pocket glock (27) in .40 if you want concealability but you are going basically full size in the 23?! You dont have a huge reduction in the "midsized" glock(23). Personally if I am carrying full size I carry one of my HK .45. When I do tests with gel, honeydew mellons, pig parts or hanging bowling pins...there is no comparison. The .40 does better than the 9mm and the .45 even more damage than 9mm or .40. In fact the bowling pins hanging bearly swing from the 9mm. The .45 nearly pulls them off the hanger. I will admit however that any hangun is less than adequate but still better than not having one.

One side note however... it takes the same sized magazine for a .40 and .357 sig in a glock (and other brands but sometimes not as available) and the replacement barrel is all you need to change calibers. I have both barrels for my glock .27 and the .357 sig is noticably more recoil on the delivery end so I am sure some of that transfers to the receiving end. Cost was $150 for the replacement barrel to convert to .357 sig.

I love my Glock 36, like the .45ACP punch in a compact and concealable package. Carry a Glock 22 - GEN4 as a duty gun as it is departmental regs, but if I had my choice it would be a full sized Glock .45 as well. Used to have a Mod. 23 and a 27 at one point for off-duty carry. If you want to go with a .40, the Mod. 23 is best compromise. It gives a decent grip and mag. capacity, yet is still somewhat concealable.
