    Here is my setup:
I added a LED light strip that is wired to the bulb socket. A lot brighter than the standard bulb. This is also a good option if you don't have an existing light socket, but can find the wiring harness.

Factory light location - just left of the latch hook:

LED strip. Factory light location and grill is also visible:
    Lig2.jpg

    And the LEDs on:

Thanks Boerseum for the pics. Two questions.

Where did you get the LED light bar?
My truck doesn't that've a plunger. Does the light stay on all the time when the parking lights are on?

Did you have any issues with the LED #74 throwing a code or is it plug and play?

I got the LED strip at Advance Auto Parts. (Autozone, O'Reilly's, Peps etc. have them also) It is fexible and can actually be cut to any length you want it.
I don't have a plunger either (yet - thinking about adding one) For now it just always stays on when the headlights/parking lights are on, same as the factory light, which is probably the reason why everyone's bulbs are burned out. Seems like most people don't even know there is a light.

Plug and play. The bulb is pole specific, so it will only work in the socket one way. The first one I threw in it was a little loose, but I found a good fit among the six I ordered. Pics to follow.

Pics below are what I have to work with. So far, I'm very pleased with the improvement.

I also replaced the shifter light with the same type of bulb, and swapped the instrument cluster lights with 194 style LEDs. Still have work to do, but it's looking great.

Knew about the ash tray light, since it still works, but never thought about upgrading it to an LED. Ordered LEDs for it and the glove box (now that I know about it having a light). Eagerly awaiting delivery...

Eh, see my Build Thread sig link. Too many mods to list.
    Neither does my '97.

I found the bulb socket behind that part of the console and put a bulb in it. Low and behold, it works. The problem is, there's no way that I can see to mount the socket in the ashtray mechanism. I've had it out several times and there's no hole. So I just stuck the socket in a hole in the lower junk pocket and I have a glow from there now.

My '99 doesn't have the GB light, but the socket hole is there.
I popped off the GB (and its 'roof ') and didn't see any un-used dangling connecter, so I'd have to do some creative wiring  to add that light.

Except now that you know that it is an option you will need it every time you open the glove box. :p Crazy how that works...:)

Easy, easy fix! LED light strip and a plunger. I'm a big fan of LED strips, so...think I'll do it!

Well that looks cheap and easy enough and looks pretty cool. Nice!

The only downers are that it's battery powered and doesn't take much effort to install. I like my little projects and my 12v stuff.

And, it's designed for "2005-2014" (i.e., 2nd Gen) Tacomas.

The ash tray looks awesome! You guys are lucky having both of those factory plus all the extra 12 volt outlets
