Personally, I think an extra 3" would be perfect for maximizing the usage of the space up there. That's what I concluded after lots of discussions and simple drawings with them. My initial goal was to provide a space to rack lumber against if I needed to do that. Second goal was to even out the proportions a little.

Doesn’t look right, needs to extend back further. Surprising they didn’t make a ‘Senior Citizen’ ladder to climb up on. “Oh look at me, i can setup my camera tripod up here”. LOL

Awsome. Thank you so much, for sure 3.5-4” would really even it out.

Yep, I thought about that. And with the header rail in the front of the bed box, it would be easy to fab a mount to secure it there. It could even be ambidextrous.

How are you liking the rack? I am thinking about pulling the trigger on one (stealth model like yours). Worth the time and wait?

Did anyone on here end up getting a custom length GOBI rack?

Also, anyone have measurements for the inside of the rack? It looks like the specs on their site are for the footprint of the rack, not the area within the upper “row”/rim of the frame. Trying to figure out what size cases can fit in the basket.

I can get you measurements tomorrow. I actually ordered an extended length and that part somehow got lost in the build process. They were totally going to build me another and swap out but it would take another 6-10 weeks so I just kept the one they sent.

Thanks! Appreciate the help, but no rush on the measurements. I'm a little ways from ordering, but planning out the size and total cost with the cases I plan to run on the rack. Bummer they messed up on the special build, but sounds like they were willing to make it right at least. Was there a big price difference for them to do the extension?

They didn’t charge me any extra for the 3-4” they were going to add.

Then again, I didn’t get that extra length so I got what I payed for.:rofl::rofl:

But seriously, they’ve been very stand up and professional each time I’ve worked with them and this is my second vehicle with a Gobi up top.

40 3/4” wide by 42 1/2” long. That’s inner clearance. Probably safe to take a 1/16th off those just to be safe. Keep in mind that the corners are rounded so if you’re really pushing dimensions in both directions, you may end up short.

If you end up finding cases that are really tight but ‘perfect’ I’d confirm with Gobi what their tolerances are. They may have a jig, but they are still hand made.

Thanks RushT, really appreciate the measurements and the feedback on your experiences with Gobi! Definitely helps before making a big purchase like the rack.

It’s definitely a big purcha$e. I just happen to like the looks of it more than the Prinsu/UpTop styles. I had an UpTop for about a day. Bravo version and I decided it wasn’t for me. I had a full length Gobi on my FJ and used it 5-6 times a year I guess. I’d fill the back with mulch bags then throw another 10-12 bags up top. I’d also haul lumber and 4x8 when needed. Once, I even strapped down about a dozen uhaul boxes and made a run to the storage unit.

For the Taco, so far it’s mostly looks and a mount for my lightbar. But hey, some people spend more than that on their wheels. So who am I to judge. LOL

PS, if you want to know how much extra length to add so lumber can rest against the tailgate and on the rack instead of the cab, let me know. I’ll measure for you.

Yeah, I prefer the look of the Gobi as well, but the weight capacity and all-welded build (besides the bracket bolts) is what really pushed me towards them. I don't mind paying more when I think there is a real benefit, although the +$250 charge to delete the front riser is hard to swallow since they seem to build to order. In my case, I'm going to be running a RTT under my softtopper when not in use, so I'm losing a lot of storage above my bed height and need to make up that storage space on the rack. It should get plenty of use at least. Hoping that will help justify the price! Nothing about the automotive hobby is cheap and we all put more $$ into our trucks than the average person, so I don't judge what people spend on one thing over another either!

Thanks for the offer to measure for lumber, but I usually do ok hanging boards over the bed extender.

FWIW, my rack came with some clamp on separator bars. They are part of the price. I see very little chance I’ll ever use them and would have preferred to save $25-$50 dollars. Also, they are giving away your choice of a backpack. It’s a pretty well built pack, but heavy for its volume and the buckles are not optimized well. It’ll last a really long time and will handle some abuse. I bought a matching for the wife and they both hang in the garage for now. If you don’t need that, perhaps they’d knock off another $25?
