Would one of these with a few other tools have helped get you back to base camp if you were able to use this on the location?

    Emergency Welder on Amazon

Just a thought, I have a welder but not for the trail, thinking that this could help given an emergency trail repair

The inReach is a pretty worthwhile piece of insurance. I have an inReach Explorer (bought it before the mini came out) and its come in handy a lot. Its just nice to be able to text my wife while out of coverage. Just as importantly, if something happens she can get in touch with me. A lot of the areas we explore have no cell signal and when we head out with our infant I would feel dumb not to have that life line.

Yea I love having the insurance of being able to get a hold of buddies to bail me out if I get in a real bad spot. We did the Death Valley Trip in February and a good trek out of cell coverage. My wife does not sleep well if I don't check in at the end of the day, So it makes returning home much more pleasant.

I just ordered the Zoleo Satellite Communication device. It's currently on sale @ REI and Amazon for $150.

It is seriously nice to have the text capability. I want to be able to text through a ham radio, just have to get my license haha

Zoleo is awesome. I use it on the job sites to order supplies and let the office know where their money is going. I've also answered a few distress calls from coworkers and contractors on the project.

Just stumbled on this great thread, Should probably be stickied on other sub forums especially with winter coming up. I also suggest watching Ronny Dahl 4wd Australia, he covers alot of recovery gear/techniques.

Isn't Zoleo text only? Or is that what you mean. Just wondering how you order supplies via text.

Text and text based email. Contractors could place an order with their base 300 miles away and a truck would arrive that night.

Nice to see the OPs post still has traction and is doing some good. Should be in the TW hall of fame if there was such a thing.

I just ordered one of those Forest Tools MAX Axes. Seems good not only for wheeling but also camping etc.

Just found this and VERY grateful to the OP!

My 2 Canadian cents (1.5 US) worth: I DO carry a good sharp axe, but I also have a 30” bow saw and a hand pruner. If a big evergreen has fallen across my path, the pruner gets rid of enough branches to let me access the trunk, and the saw will cut through any tree I can expect to be able to move. I find a saw easier to use than an axe. And while the pruner is slower than the axe in clearing branches, my chances of cutting myself or getting whacked in the face by a branch are much lower.

Again, awesome post and very much appreciated!!

That is all I carry now. For someone who doesn't use an axe every week (and be honest, in 2023 how many of us do?) a bow saw will do more work faster and safer. But I get no cool kid overlander display points <jacking off motions>. I do carry a decent hatchet but it stays in my "get home in, or survive for, three days" bag.

I carry an axe, but it is mostly used for chopping wood for camping, which I enjoy.

You are right about a saw being more efficient, but it is nice to have an axe or hatchet to limb and get some working space
