I am not adding anything new to your post, but I wheel alone a lot and I have done a lot of dangerous stuff in the woods by myself for extended periods of time. I have to say the most important thing for me is a sense of prudence. You need to slow down in everything you do. Be deliberate and cautious especially when doing something risky. When you are out alone, things like cutting your meat with a knife now becomes serious business. After 30+ years in the woods, my advice is - slow down and use your head.

Do you carry a basic tool set with the wrench/socket sizes found on the Tacoma? Didn't see it mentioned but I may have missed it.

Yes I do. And vice grips. Vice grips will fix anything.

So glad I found this thread. I've started to put together some basic recovery and safety items. Would you be able to post a list of what you've done? Thanks for this awesome write up.

Hi Lift jacks are quite dangerous. It's best to avoid using one if you don't have to. For changing flats, I use my Hi Lift base and my stock bottle jack. It works perfectly with 3" lift and 33s.

Photobucket has been down all day, hopefully they get it resolved in a manner that does not result in having to re-upload photos.

In other news, I polished this up a bit and submitted it to expedition portal as an article. First time doing anything like that, hopefully it makes it.

Great thread. For me, the biggest safety factor when exploring alone is just being willing to turn around and backtrack instead of trying to get past a tough spot. Just a few days ago I was driving home alone from Redwood National Park via some forest service roads when I came to a section where a small landslide had been cleared. I was pretty certain I could make it, and there were some other vehicle tracks going through, but I got out and looked at the muddy ruts on one side and the steep drop-off on the other side and decided it just wasn't worth the risk so I turned back. I was really pissed off and it added a lot more driving time to get home but I know it was the right decision. DSC00398.jpg

No. I did that prior to submitting.

I do plan on writing an article specifically addressing firearms.
