    Has any one gone from a 1st gen Tundra to a 3rd gen Tacoma? What was your impression?

    I went from a 2002 Tundra AC V8 to a 2016 Tacoma Limited and I am very happy I did so. Five plus years out and I still am a happy camper. I am eyeing the 2022 Tundra though, but I'll have to wait and see what it offers.

    Not a first gen. My Tundra was a 2008, but I drove it for twelve years. Quite a difference between it and my ‘19 Taco. How you feel about the move from one to the other greatly depends on what you’re looking to do with it.

    2005 tundra awesome truck great power and room. If you don’t need the space and haul a lot the taco is great. Sometimes I miss my tundra but I always love my Tacoma.

    Working on it ...
    I had a 1988 -> 2000 -> 2002 -> 2019 ... All I can say is that I worked all my trucks and they had well over 100,000 miles on them.

    I liked all my trucks (all 4x4) as they were extremely reliable. But my 2019 TRD sport, it is by far the largest and roomiest of all of them. Also the most comfortable of all of them.

    I've had a 98 then an 04 then jumped to a 2017. Sometimes i miss the old school feel but the 3rd gen is WAY more refined so i love my new truck. It's been just as reliable as my oils ones.

    Owned a 2001 tundra sr5 4.7 for 19 years, best truck owned till this 2020 taco. I put nearly 300k miles on the tundra, and would bought another if toyota made one of similar size. Only things i miss having the tacoma is a smaller width bed, and a less plush ride, otherwise it able to perform all the duties my tundra did except with much better fuel economy.

    Can anyone comment on the loss of torque? I do a bit of towing.

    Which motor did you have? Didn't the 1st Gen Tundra have the 3.4L, the 4.0L & the 4.7L?

    Here's $0.02 of opinion -

    The 2GR-FKS pretty handily whoops the 3.4L 5VZ-FE in my own experience. My old 4Runner was pretty gutless compared to the new Taco. It was very snappy on the low end which I attribute to the motor having a real throttle cable and the 4Runner being geared correctly. Weak top-end tho. I miss that gutless pig haha

    I test drove the crap out of a 2015 Taco before picking up my 2019 TRDOR. I'd say the 3.5L & the 4.0L are pretty similar when the 2GR-FKS isn't doing it's Atkinson thing. The 2GR has quite a bit more top end tho, which is to be expected for an appx. 40HP difference between the two.

    Unfortunately I cannot speak to the 4.7L, maybe someone else here can. I'd guess that the 4.7L's 325 tq's will be pretty noticeable compared to the 265 tq's of the 2GR - especially since the 4.7L is a (small) V8 w/ more displacement.

    All i can comment on was with the 4.7 tundra i carried one snowmobile in the bed and pulled a 2 place triton or sno-pro enclose trailer with 2 sleds and gear with no problem doing 1000 mile round trips to central quebec during the winter. In the summer i would tow my 2k lb. or so boat. Currently i no longer snowmobile in quebec...sold the trailer. I have a smaller 5x10 aluma utility trailer if needed, and still have the boat/trailer. The taco does perfectly fine when towing either using the ECT S5 mode or just S5. Only thing i miss was the tundra's 4' plus width between the beds wheel wells.

    Yeah I am waning a 4.7 comparison. You could get the 6cyl in some of the base Tundras, but I don't think it is very common. Most of them have the 4.7.

    Owned a 2002 AC 4WD 4.7L Limited Tundra first, got totaled by a driver high as a kite. Got a 2003 AC TRD OR 4WD 4.7L Tundra to replace it. It had 35's and 4.56's. Traded that for my 2017 TRD OR Tacoma, and it ended up in the hands of a lucky driver all the way out in Colorado (I traded it in Georgia). It was a significant difference from a V8 to V6. The V8 and gears helped with low end torque but at high speeds, the Tacoma felt better. The taco gets significantly better gas mileage, again gears and tire size are factors for that. I'm happy with the move from the Tundra to the taco. The size dimensions between the two vehicles are within inches of eachother, so it doesn't feel different when parking or driving (excluding how it performs). I didn't use the Tundra for towing, and I don't use my taco for that, but I do know someone who did and traded their '21 taco for a Tundra (@olecoot). So if that's a must for you, you may want to reconsider. Even some of the tunes available don't help much, especially if you tow for long distances.

    I use to tow 10 hrs to quebec with my 2001 v8 tundra many times, and tow my boat down here. Never had an issue except getting 14 mpg. So far my tacoma is much better averaging about 19 mpg pulling a smaller trailer and lighter load. Both trucks appear to pull about the same, just not use 6th gear od thats in the taco. With gas prices now rising out of control i'm happy to have the tacoma.
