We have no solid plans other then hitting Crater Lake. We may bring fishing gear but iv never fished places like trinity river or Klamath. Any info from fellow road warriors is much appreciated. P.s. We like everything from target practice to gold panning. Could end up being 3 days so we want to fill our time with fun stuff to do. We have made it tradition to hit any local breweries so we have a few on the list in Oregon. I am aware of the weather but to hell with it, I have gear.

I’d like to see some of what you see driving along the highway. Boring, I know. Edit: I can see just trees in any picture. Good luck on the adventure!

Also most of Crater Lake is closed in the winter because they average something crazy like 25’ of snow.

Wife and I made a trip to Crater lake back in October. We stopped in Weed at Mt. Shasta Brewing Co on the way up, it was pretty cool, small and laid back. We came back through Ashland and stopped at Caldera Brewery, much larger place but good food. I liked the beer at Shasta better.

3 days to drive from San Jose to Crater lake ? That’s about 400 miles each way. With traffic, weather, gas stops, food stops, miscellaneous, etc. hard to do that in less than 7 hours each way probably longer, 8 hours or so. That will leave you little time to plan much. That short of time you may want to plan a closer destination. Just saying.

Stop at Yak's in Dunsmuir. Assuming they're still open... get a burger and or a sticky bun. You'll thank me later. Safe travels.

I know of someone who just went to Crater Lake. They took pictures and it looked like the roads were open. Have fun!

This is my rig. I think you can tell the miles to us are part of the adventure. We decided to shoot over to southern Utah instead. Lots of available and open places to overland and pitch a tent (uncle insist on using his tent). Plus my wife and I are moving out that way not to long from now. Zion in the winter is so nice.

It does look like it will snow right around the time we plan on being in the area. May be smarter/safer to do Utah. I'm sure my uncle would be bummed if we had to power towards the coast to have any tent pitching options. Lots of Utah is open and we may want to do some shooting.

Headin to Southern Utah myself in a couple weeks. Made the trip many times. You are right there are a zillion places in Nevada and Utah to camp and shoot. Keep your gas tank full, gas stations are far between. If you go the route through Tonopah the sign outside Tonopah says no gas or services 168 miles and they aren’t kidding. 168 miles of desert, no towns, no houses , just nothing. Good luck, have fun.
