Your engine has a built in colormetric indicator on oil change interval...if you can't read the dipstick through the oil, time to change:)

Even on military aircraft, we allow 10% overage on service intervals, so 5600 is OK, just change it next at 4400.

Better yet, learn how to do it yourself. It takes 10 mintues and you can do it with white gloves on. A wrench for the drain plug, a dish or cat litter pan for the used oil, a pair of oil change pliers (I like the channel lock brand) and finally, an empty plastic beer cup to catch the oil filter drips.

While I like the WIX filter, the FRAM filter is almost universally available at the local wally world.

That makes no sense. There is no reason to change oil early the next time unless your working the truck extremely hard.

Oil lasts much longer then people think, there was a study and a survey about that a while ago with mechanics and lab nerds, and they concluded motor oil at this stage in time along with motor advancements can last i believe it was 8-10,000 miles and be fine, plus the engines run so much more efficient then before.

Since I got the truck new I do oil changes as close to 5,000 mi incriments. ie as close to 5,000, 10,000, 15,000 and so on. So I dont even need to keep the sticker on my windshield. I have gone about 800 over with this truck. But for simplicity I do it on the 5,000 intervals. my 92 GTI I went 13,000 mi without changing and no issues.

To sum it up - going over 600 miles typically will not hurt anything, but if your working your truck hard try not to exceed the limits. Maybe develop a system that works for you. With my wife's vehicle, since I do not drive it daily, its harder to keep track of the miles, so I a place a sticker (available for free at autozone), which has the next oil change date and mileage. The number I use is 3500 miles from last oil change. This gives me a 1500 mile cushion, and if my wife forgets to tell me the oil needs to be changed, (happens a lot), I usually catch it somewhere in "my cushion" of 1500 miles. Just an idea...

look into the chart; that is for the tacoma 4 CYL.

As far as I have read, 1GR-FE was approved for 10K oil changes, but maybe not specifically the tacoma.

Please, experts (chris, etc) chime in.

    Synthetic Oil
What are the oil change intervals using this new oil? Are they longer?

    Isn't synthetic oil expensive?

Are there any other benefits to using synthetic oil?

What if I change the oil myself but 0W-20 synthetic oil isn't available?

Can I use any brand of 0W-20 synthetic oil?

What are the oil change intervals using this new oil? Are they longer?
Yes! The superior qualities of synthetic oil have allowed the oil change interval to be extended from 5,000 miles to 10,000 miles for most models. However, you should continue to check the oil level regularly and top-off if needed. That will help your engine get the full benefit of the new oil.

Disclaimer: 2010/2011 Tacoma 4-cylinder and 2010 4-Runner 4-cylinder with engine 2TR-FE, while synthetic oil vehicles, have oil change intervals at 5,000 miles/6 months.
Also, if 0W-20 is not available, 5W-20 oil may be used, but all vehicles must be replaced with 0W-20 within 5,000 miles/6 months.

You should be fine. I almost never make it in on that 5k mark. I typically get it done around 5.2k or even more sometimes. Most of my drive time is throughout the city.

All my cars get a 10K or 6month change interval. Last 3 cars made well past 100K some even in the 170K mark. Never had a issue, cars run like new. Just make sure u run full synthetic and a good filter (Mobile 1 for me). The filter is the weakest link, not the oil. Outside the US the recommended change interval is ~6K on conventional. BMW's don't change their oils until 12K-15K. Had an X5 back in the day and nutting but electrical problems. Motor was fine. Its all a marketing poly by big oil to get u to buy more of this finite resource.

I don't think so...the Wix is available by the CASE on my home from work...the other brands need a special trip.

And it is so much easier to stop at NAPA than to order a case off the internet.

There are many brands of excellent filters out there. Baldwin, OEM, NAPA, WIX...while FRAMS are in last place, but available 24/7 at WallyWorld.

I won't say that I have NEVER been at WallyWorld at 2AM getting oil, filters, wiper blades, batteries or sparkplugs, it is my third choice.

I did my first service at 5.6k miles as well. I now have almost 35k on it, engine hasn't blown up because I didn't do the oil change at 5000 miles exactly. So you'll be good, just make sure you do the next one a 10k, not 10600k.

That is not logical. The next oil change is still good for 5k+.

True, not logical. Just a matter of choice.
