Going to buy my first TRD Off-Road. My first Tacoma(2wd access cab) was very reliable, easy to work on, diagnose and cheap to fix so I have decided to move up to a Tacoma double cab TRD Off-Road.

Can't afford a Gen3 and quite frankly not feeling them too much. I can afford a low mileage 2015-2014 but I prefer a lower payment.

I'm currently looking at 3 but my main focus is a TRD Off-Road 2009 with 110,000 miles. It's listed for $19,000. You guys think I can lower the price to $17,000? or am I asking for too much of a discount? Won't know until I try but not sure if I am being realistic or not.

Going to be my first time buying a truck at the dealer. Planning on making the trip tomorrow.

I certainly hope you can. I bought a '14 brand new for $30,800 plus taxes and fees. Bought a '15 a year later for $31,200. Both TRD OR DC SB with the tow package and entune radio. Sticker was around $35-36k each time.

I'd spend a little more time looking for a lower mileage example. $25-26k for one with half those miles would be a MUCH better deal imho.

Make the offer be prepared to walk if you don't get where you want to be.

Pretty simple. Those who get the best deals are patient and do not need the vehicle as a necessity.

The other two are the following:

    2012 with 110k miles listed for $23,000

    2013 with 55k miles listed for $26,500

Both are TRD Off-Roads. The 2012 is a TX TRD.

Thoughts? The 2013 has been for sale since mid February.

A 2012 with 75k miles sold for $23k earlier this month but I just couldn't make it to the dealership the day the price was dropped that low.

Thanks for the advice. If I don't get the price I want at least I will have visited a town I've never been to lol. :D

The '13 is far and away the best deal of those you've listed.

+1, and you should still have room to negotiate it down... I paid only $24.6K for my 45K mile CPO 2013 Access Cab 4x4 V6 6MT, TRD OR over a year ago.

Be patient and follow @TyAtkinson's advice.

Agreed. One thing to consider is going with 12+ gives you updated front end/interior, which could mean greater resale value down the road.

For what it's worth, I've worked at dealerships for the past few years and have personally witnessed how much dealers over pay for trades. Don't be surprised if a dealer doesn't want to negotiate much because realistically they typically don't have the margins on used cars people think they do.

The 09 appears to be a trade in.
The 2012 was purchased at auction and the front bumper has a long scratch on top of the license plate.
The 2013 was purchased from a car rental company(wow didn't know we could rent those).

Are the margins for dealers much better for cars they purchase at auctions compared to trade ins?

The market here locally for TRD Off-Road Tacomas sucks ass. Everything under 50k miles is listed over $30,000.

Best deals I ever see are all the way out in Texas and that's a 24hr drive.

That '13 is definitely the way to go IMHO. If I were to do it again, this would be exactly what I was looking for. The mileage is low, and the money you are saving from buying used is freed up for mods and savings.

Best of luck in whatever direction you go, FNH.

This is something that I just learned when buying my wife a minivan (that thing we were just saying we would never buy...). I tried hard balling a few dealerships and they flexed as much as they could, or so I guessed based on their follow ups. After I did get one down to my price range to year/miles ratio, one of the previous sales reps I had visited called me back for a third time. When I told him what I got and for how much, he said I got a great deal. He and I went on to have a 15 minute conversation about exactly what you had mentioned. I guess they do that on trades just to move their new inventory.

How much do you guys think I can shave off of the price of the 2013 priced at $26,500?

I know everything we say here is just a guesstimate but just curious. I haven't done a lot of dealer car buying in my life.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if you could get much more than $500 off, based on the SoCal market for ORs in that range. But I honestly have incredibly limited used vehicle purchasing experience, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Typically yes, but not always. If the person buying at auction is smart they can save maybe up to a couple thousand over what they would pay for a trade when selling a new car. But I've also seen the fill-in guy buy a basket case that was beyond repair and had to go right back to the auction.

Sometimes they will buy certain vehicles (even if they know they will only break even) just to get people on the lot looking. Then they hit them up with a better (higher priced) car instead.

That's almost impossible to guess. Ideally they were smart enough to get it for a good price, and there weren't any major problems once they got it.

The worst part about buying a Toyota truck or SUV is that dealers don't have a problem selling them. Unless they have a stupid mark up, average (retail market value) priced tacomas and 4runners do not sit on the lot very long.

I just bought a 14 off road from the company I work for, knowing the used car manager, I was able to see our actual cost of all toyotas and 4runners we had in the area at time (between 6 different stores, various brands) and they were usually $1-$2k below what they were asking. When you factor all that in, plus the fact that salesmen are paid on commission, there's not a lot of incentive to haggle on prices.

I'm not trying to be a downer here or discourage you, definitely try to get the best deal possible. The reality is, the used car market is insane compared to several years ago, and toyotas have such a good reputation that it's hard to get anything cheap. I probably paid too much for my truck, but I don't even care because I love it. I would do it again every time.

Of course this is all my opinion, every vehicle, dealer, salesman, and car deal will vary.

back in november, i bought my first tacoma. A 2009 DCLB trd sport. Had BFGs, black rhino hard alloys, snugtop shell, navigation, back up camera. spacer lift on front. right at 90,000 miles and it was a one owner. listed for $19,998 and this was at a dodge dealership. they did not really want to budge on that list price at all. They told me the truck would be about 22,000 out the door, figure about 10 percent of taxes and fees added onto the list price down here in southern california. I did not want to pay 22k. I ended up getting it out the door for about 20,500. which may be a little high but i dont care, i like the truck. I ended up selling the topper for 1000 dollars anyway. Plus i didnt have to put money into it in rims and tires and navigation. Find the best truck for your budget, and buy it

I envy these people. I suck at buying used cars. I'm a salesman's dream when I walk through the door. Few questions, no haggling, where do I sign!

I just bought a '15 TRD Sport DCSB about a month ago. Paid a whopping $33k for it. The kicker was it only had 7,700 miles on it. It was practically brand-new.

Honestly, I felt that with the mileage being so low, I didn't really have much room to haggle. They listed it the previous night and I was at the dealership as soon as they opened the following morning. I don't think it would've stayed on the lot very long.

In the end, I'm not too worried about it. I absolutely, dearly love my first Tacoma and I don't care if I paid a little high on it. It's only money. I'll make more.

This is how I view things. I got the truck I wanted, in the budget I made. I'm happy. Could I have saved $800-$1,000 more if I really tried, ehhh maybe?? But who the hell cares. I got my 2013! Now if I got taken for a $5,000 ride shame on me lol.

I got what I wanted, all that matters.

I bought mine(09 DBLC TRD Sport) a month ago with 94k on it. Lifted with fairly new 285s, everything working (checked, even the temp gauge and compass) JBL stereo(which is being replaced). They had it listed at a Hyundai dealership for 17,995. Apparently I went on a day they felt friendly because after a couple hours of kicking tires and trading BS, we settled on 14,600 cash price. I danced in the seat all the way on the drive home. Granted, this is in NC and other states have more demand for these trucks(this is diesel country it seems). Good luck finding the best deal that makes you dance in the seat all the way home.

Gonna go see the 2013 first tomorrow. Has been on their lot for sale since mid February. If I could lower it to $24,000 I would take it. I know the market is much hotter in CA. Will be going out of state

    Will see the 2009 afterwards.

Gonna search for more today to ad to my list.

    WOW, great going!

I picked up a 2011 tx pro double cab short bed truck w/ 92000 miles on it. Probably paid a little high @ 20k plus taxes. I like the truck and the re-sale value for them around me is strong.

Is there a difference between the TX TRD and the TX PRO TRD? I've seen BOTH side badges.
