Also, True Value is an excellent hardware store. I'm thinking of buying a new garden hose and I know exactly what I want and will not settle for anything less.

So I literally just got back from the dealership and signed the paperwork to pick my first taco tomorrow.
Got a 2016 DC Trd off road 4x4 SB with premium and tech / no JBL in metallic silver for 35,500 out the door.
Thought I'd share if it helps.

I don't think that specific question would be relevant to negotiating. First lock down the $, then I will personally decide if I write you a check or finance depending on how much it is... Simple. I can't tell you how much I want to pay per month without knowing the total damage.

Does the dealer have the truck in stock that you want? Do you know what you should be paying? Get multiple quotes from other dealers in the area. Do all of this prior to going into the dealership unless you are going just to drive one and leave. These are the tools that you need prior to going to the dealership. It sounds as though you are going to go to the dealership and get raped by the salesman because you haven't done your "research" first. Not meant to be an attack just slow down and be ready to tell them what it is that you want. This is what I did and I did it by emailing 20 (No BS) dealers fleet departments trying to get them to agree to the pricing before even having a phone call. That's the nice thing about doing it online. Most of the time a phone number is not required and so they will not be able to blow up your phone for the next 6 months

I did exactly what lauch21v just said. I live on the border of KY/TN so I was emailing dealerships on both sides and sending each the others quote. Went to the dealership and I've always heard be ready to say good bye, I never realized how much that works. They started at MSRP cause " it's a hard truck to find and in a very high deman " so I said oh ok thanks for your time, I'll wait till the market adjust. Suddenly the price dropped to 36,500. Said again, no thanks, not paying a dime more than 35,500. Got up to leave a few times, got to my bike, and suddenly the hidden boss of some department approved it. Did they make some money ? I'm sure, they did. It's called capitalism and that's why they have a business, but I came in with a price I can live with and willing to leave is key. Hope this helps.

Research first. Start with pricing the truck you want through the thread in this forum. Figure out invoice so you know what the "actual" price is. As previously mentioned, contact as many dealerships in your area as possible and ask them for a quote on price for ordering/building the exact truck you want. Just by doing that, I was able to get a few offers at invoice and 500 over invoice. Don't talk down payment, don't talk trade, don't talk financing, don't talk anything but sale price of the truck you are ordering. Make them email you the price back. Hopefully you'll get a good offer. Take that to, or email, your local dealer if it is not the low offer and ask what they can do.

And as just said above, try to walk out at least 2 or 3 times. They don't want you to leave.

True car says the average paid is 33200 but of the 3 dealerships i've contaced the price is anywhere from 33500 to 36800. A dealership close to my work has one thats really close to what I want and thats 33089

That should be your baseline for what you'll pay. Some people have claimed some outrageous deals on here below invoice but you should be able to find someone willing to let you pay invoice plus fees. I haven't found a dealer willing to discount the deliver and dealer prep fee though at $900. Good luck.

You could always build it and actually submit it through Truecar as well. Did that for my wife's forester and ended up with an awesome deal close to invoice, and below what was quoted on true car.

From what I've found truecar was giving me pricing of $1000 over invoice. No dealers in Cali would touch it though because they said they didn't have to go that low because demand is too high.

I thought truecar was going to be the route I was going to take until I figured out that I could get a better deal on my own with a little extra work.

Finding out invoice pricing and emailing 20 different dealerships. I'm going out of state to get my truck. Saving a few grand is worth the hassle though. Truecar only gives you 3 local dealers. It's not a very good sample of deals that may be outside of your local area.
