What have you read about gold prospecting?

Sounds like you are getting off to a good start by reading and informing yourself.

I can recommend more material to read if you like.

Just the legalities for CA, where to go, what to look for, what equipment is best etc.

If you have any recommendations for reading material I'm game. I'm finding it really interesting to read about how to go about it as well as the history!

I will post up some info this evening from home.
Funny you mention history as that is where many of the best clues come from as far as where to find gold.

There was a reddit post of a guy that came accross an abandoned mine with thick quartz veins and what appeared like gold.

    Very intriguing video.

Thanks! Yeah there's a couple I'm going to return to take a look. Maybe one this weekend.

Probably some good spots down there too.
