Gonna be in the market for a taco in the spring of 17-questions

Hello all. I just sold my 2012 Power Wagon. I really liked the truck but didnt like the miserable gas mileage. Also it was developing death wobble at just a tad over 30,000 miles. I didn't feel like throwing money at that issue. I'm driving a 10 Rubicon for the time being (Wife's) she has a car to drive while I'm driving the Rubi. Anyway I'm going to be buying a Taco in May or so and I'm beginning my research. I've built an SR5, TRD Off road and TRD sport. I'm leaning towards a double cab/long bed, automatic TRD off road with the sun roof package. What gearing does the Off road run? The sport? SR5? Any known issues with each model? Any suggestions of options or models? Just looking for the experts here to fill me in.

I believe someone posted some info earlier this week saying the 2017s with the AT will have a 4.3 rear end and the MTs will have a 3.9.

The TRDOR seems to have the most complaints here on TW, one well known member alone has over 4k post full of issues.
Among some of the complaints expressed by some members, the vehicle has no power. I guess some ppl thought they were buying a V-8.
I would highly recommend a test drive before buying.

The TRDOR is the flag ship so it's bound to take the most blows IMHO.
I have an SR5 4X4 DC LB V-6 auto flawless, plenty power and wouldn't hesitate to buy or recommend. But I would have no hesitations about buying any trim including the TRDOR either, based on real world NHSTA data.

Is this actually confirmed? Seems odd that Toyota would do all of its development and testing for the 3rd gen then one year in go "whoops" and reverse the ratios. Autos had the 3.9, manuals had the 4.3 for 2016.

If the autos really needed the 4.3 ratio then why didn't they just make it 4.3 across the board or vice versa with 3.9 for the manuals....

 

The lack of overall power/torque isn't even a valid complaint. It is there. It's an engine that has its max torque at around 3.2-3.5k RPM and max HP at redline. There isnt much going on at the low end. With an automatic transmission and EPA standards it is constantly trying to get max mpg and stay in the lower range (thus feels like there is no power/torque).

If you have an automatic and you want the power you need to mash the gas, which people just aren't used to for previous cars/trucks.

If you have a manual transmission, well, I haven't seen one person with a manual complain about torque/power yet.

 

FWIW I talked to an internet sales manager, at first he told me they didn't have a reason to believe they would change gearing, but when he looked and compared he told me the 2017s have 4.3 across the board. Not sure about the 4cyl but for the v6 thats what he said. We will know for sure when more start hitting the lots.

And If you have an auto you also have a S mode, Manual mode, ECT button.
But you have to test drive these things before plunging $40k on it, and ask the sales person where the gas pedal is.

It's true. Check spec sheet on attached toward back of PDF. M/Ts going to 3.9. Autos are going to 4.30... this helps bring a little more torque to the lower end.

 

My advice. Test drive. Test drive test drive all of the Tacoma configurations before buying
