    hey folks,

Sorry if this has been covered but I can't find it. I have a 2017 dcsb TRD-OR I want to lift about 1.5". Im not interested in a 2"+ lift. I'll be sticking with 265/75/16 tires and we use our trucks off road frequently.

My last 3 trucks have had Bilstein 5100 shocks, I understand these are capable of giving me the desired lift size. My previous experiences with them have been mediocre. Reliable yes, but stiff and only so so on washboard roads.

If I used the 5100's, any lift I'd get would be at the expense of down travel, am I understanding that correctly? So what lift options are out there that wont reduce my down travel while still giving the desired lift?

Thanks and sorry again if this has been covered, every thing I've found was looking for budget options which I'm not concerned about or 2.5"+ of lift which I'm also not interested in.

Edit to add: we almost always have our trailer with us when off road, it weighs about 2500 lbs. I also fully understand how to get the desired lift/ride in the rear. Im just not sure what to do in the front.

I just went with 5100’s and am happy, bu you might want to try the next step up with 6112’s.
I don’t think 5100’s reduce down travel though. They are longer than stock and should have the same overall amount of travel within their adjustment range.

Thank you, ill do more research on the 5100's. Maybe I was understanding incorrectly. I thought I've read the 6112's give like 2.5"+ of lift.

6112s are just like a 5100 but way beefier. They use a C clip to make the bottom coil perch adjustable in height. I'm unsure what the exact set up would be as far as shock/coil combo to get the lift, but it'd be possible. Or you can always get a higher end adjustable coilover, and just have it adjusted low, for your desired lift.

6112’s have a 0-2” lift range with the included springs, depending on the clip setting.

Thanks fellas, I'm going to look into the 6112's. I must've misread when researching them earlier.

    ride is buttery smooth

front struts have clips as well, min is 2” lift. You can run a 1” block in the rear to get you leveled.

For every 1" you increase the ride height of an IFS suspension you lose 1" of down travel (aka droop). My 3rg gen came from the factory with 3" of down travel and 5" (estimated) of up travel. Lifting it 2" changes this to 1" of down travel and 7" of up travel. I have not experienced, but have heard of bad things happening when you get too close to 0" of down travel. You can get 1" of down travel back, by paying a lot of money for an extended travel coilover solution (e.g. King, Fox, etc).

This is what I had read about the 5100's, but you're saying its the case with any standard coil/shock lift? So its impossible to gain overall travel without king/fox/etc extended coilovers.

So if its not the coil or shock, whats the limiting factor for the overall travel on these trucks, the control arms? Or maybe I'm just not understanding something else

Going to only 1" of down travel seems like it would hinder performance off road, not help.

Ball joint angles and the angle of the CV axle. Extended travel coilovers and new UCAs will get you a little more travel (maybe another inch of droop), but you're not gaining any real travel until you get long travel control arms and axles.

OP 1.5” front lift 1.5 “ rear lift Aal 5100’s no complaints ride is stiffer but in a good way. Great budget lift. Camping light trails etc. won’t disappoint. Lots of good advice on here. Good luck just my 2cents. Pic for reference 8784EC0B-A450-49D7-BAA3-B2DC7BBFA2B6.jpg

Sharp truck! The 5100's aren't off the table but my experiences have been so-so with them. We aren't hard core rock crawlers, but do find ourselves tackling more than light forest service roads occasionally.

Thank you bro. 5100’s are nice not the best but Work great for my needs. Light trails and camping. No nose dive body roll on turns you know. 6112’s are sick also. Eibach great kit as well.

The physical limiter that stops the wheel from traveling downward under normal conditions is not totally clear to be but I assume it is the shock absorber. Upward travel is most likely limited by the bump stop under normal conditions. The extended length coil overs plus aftermarket UCA’s allow for an extra inch of travel, but are ultimately limited by the range of motion but of the CV joint and ball joints I would assume.

This. I have the 6112/5160 combo and really like it. You will want to find an Icon pack or AAL for the rear at that height.

My only real complaint was when trying to cover ground on washboard roads. They didn't handle much speed without bouncing and rattling like crazy. Normally I'd just slow down but when its getting late and we haven't found a site yet we get impatient.

I'm researching this setup now. Seems it may be a good compromise between performance and price.

I've had it out in deep mud and ruts, but nothing super difficult yet.

Nice truck! Are those 285's? We don't find ourselves in a ton of mud, mostly rocky areas in Colorado and Utah.
