Good affordable impact wrench

Milwaukee.... buy once cry once... its also really not that expensive.

Keep in mind though whatever you buy youre going to be stuck in that battery system if you ever plan on buying more tools.

yeah, but once one steps up to the 5.0/6.0 size packs over the 1.5/2.0/3.0cp's, the m12 series really loses it's compactness. it becomes just as bulky as an m18 impact.

and the m18 5.0+ packs have more cells, which means a wider distributed current draw, which means more power for longer.

I have the MUCH less powerful version of Ryobi and it has never left me wishing I had more. The only bolts I couldn't do were some massive frame bolts on my old car, honestly the thread locker was the biggest issue as it could move the bolt but couldn't do it continuously.

As others have said, but into an architecture. I like Ryobi for my hobby stuff but it's not something to run a business with. I just like to because there are a TON of different tools

 

EE here that designs control systems using brushless DC motors for a living. That's now how it works.

The M12 5.0 and M18 5.0 still each have 2 cells in parallel the difference being the M18 has 5 cells in series vs 4 cells in series for the M12 pack. The amps are still spread over 2 parallel regardless of the pack so the only reason you would get longer runtime is due to a lower power draw. This means that if the tool is drawing 2 amps, then each cell sees a 1 amp draw regardless of the pack (assuming both are the 5ah pack).

Torque is also directly related to amp draw, so, similar battery life for the same ah if the power is the same.

Now the compactness, I 100% agree with.

Milwaukee M18, 3/8" will pull almost all but, the most stubborn lugs off. regularly you can find a combo deal for both the 1/2" and the 3/8" with 2 batteries and a charger for less than 500 shipped. buy once, cry once. no more air tools was the goal. I am almost there. Ski

 

I use a corded Bauer from HF, only $90. Super cheap and has 1000 ft lbs of take off torque if you need it for other things.

Don’t have to worry about batteries and charging. Just plug in and go.

 

I’ve had an air impact for a long time. Then last year I bought a 1/2” Dewalt impact. I haven’t use the air since and never will. The battery powered wrench has more power and is so much more convenient to use with no air hose to lug around. It’s also great to throw in the truck on trips or going to help someone with a flat tire, etc.

 

Makita fan boy here. About the only thing I can say about Makita over other brands is that Makita is independently owned. Many big names are owned by corporations - Craftsman, Dewalt, Ryobi, Milwaukee, Porter Cable, Skil, Ridgid, Hart, Matco, Kobalt and many others. And other brand names are parent companies like Stanley/Black & Decker, Snap-On, and Bosch. The few independents are Makita, Hilti and Fein. Makita is parent company to Dolmar, a gas-powered chainsaw company, but the Makita brandname is still considered independently owned. Makita does tend to cost more but their products are good quality and they have an extensive product line.

I recommend battery powered over cord so you can take the power tool(s) beyond your house. I take some of my power tools when I go on off-roading, camping, and when I take long trips.

check the link daily. No impacts on it today, but it’s a rotation. About every 8 days or so is tools. Plus the Black Friday sales at the moment, or ACME tools refurbished section.

Ryobi P262 impact does great for me. I’m using it every day at the shop though. It has an “auto” function that will stop when something is tight. I’ve found that if I’m putting lug nuts back on and I start it with my hand then impact it on the rest of the way the auto stops it at between 40-60 ft/lbs. Great feature for new users who aren’t super familiar with the tool yet.

 

I’ve lost count of how many Makita LXTs I’ve broken at work. Granted they were mainly the drills, not the drivers, but it made me reluctant to go in that direction.

That being said, we broke two Milwaukee jig saws in a day, so maybe we are a bit hard on tools.

 

Was just about to ask, Can I get away with a brushless impact driver over the impact wrenches? I'm on the DeWalt battery platform if it makes a difference.

Dewalt has a bunch on differential impact drivers and wrenches. The small 1/4” driver will work on smaller nuts and bolts but probably won’t remove lug nuts. I use a 1/4” one for removing skid plates and things and the big 1/2” for lug nuts and other bolts. It has three power settings. When I put the lug nuts back on I snug them up on power 1 then on 2 and then just two hits on power 3. That puts them right around 100 ft/lbs.

 

I’ll get hate for this, and trust me when I tell you I love my fuel, but Ryobi’s impact ain’t bad. I actually have quite of a few Ryobi’s tools and never blink an eye at using them. The best tool is the tool in your hand.

Now… if only they could get a better designed cordless ratchet lol. Until then, Milwaukee has my money.
