MSRP of $45970 on a 24 SR5 with SP package/cold weather package(heated seats, steering wheel ) and JBL stereo upgrade. I initially looked at an off road(base model) which sold before I made a deposit. They had that off road at $42500 and are offering me same price on the SR5 when it comes in. Seems like a good deal as I look at dealer sites around the country. I put deposit on it to hold until it hits the lot and I decide. Currently have a 2019 Colorado Z71 recently out of warranty with transmission shudder coming back at 52000 miles. I’m done with GM at this point. Gonna give me $25000 trade in. Gonna take my equity and lease the 24 Taco and see how the new model is for reliability and buy at end possibly. Lease residual at $32-33000 in 36 months. Got all numbers on paper from dealer and zero down lease at $519 a month for 36-39 months. Opinions ??

Leasing is a really boneheaded financial decision. Buy the truck or fix your Colorado, or buy something else. But don't lease

Have you done the math on this? $50,684-$53,241 for a SR5 IF you end up keeping it. Otherwise $18,684-$20,241 to rent a truck for around 3 years. Not for me, but someone is leasing vehicles, so they keep offering. Cheap way to get into a truck if you don't want to put money down I suppose.

Colorado tranny shudder came back at 52k? What fixed it the first time?

For what it’s worth, I paid $32K for my 2021 4x4 SR5 when it was brand new. I know it’s a different truck and different times, etc. but $42K for an SR5 of any gen/year sounds like a massive rip off.

I also would never lease a vehicle but that’s just me. Kinda like renting an apartment but worse.

I'm almost 65 and never leased anything in my life. I grew up poor and always thought twice about spending money.
I saw these stupid crazy prices coming a couple years ago during the pandemic and sold my 65 Galaxie show car to buy a new Mazda CX5 with cash. I'm so glad I did that.
No car payments and I own a 13 Sienna with 81K and a 17 Tacoma with 31K both paid for. I don't see needing to go your route in my lifetime.

I honestly don't know how younger people are going to be able to keep paying these kinds of prices and making insane car payments which are more than the monthly payment on my house.
Cars are a disposable product and only lasts just so long so to waste $30-40-50000 plus is just that, a waste. People keep paying it though like they have no other choice. They get caught up in the I gotta have it thinking loaded with everything possible and pay ridiculous prices which is what manufacturers are wanting you to do. Do you ever see a base model car on the lot anymore?

My brother and brother in law both stopped buying new cars years ago and the one can afford a new car but prefers to drive his 93 Highlux with over 200K on it. He just takes care of it and fixes what needs to be fixed and just keeps going. My brother has a 2000 S10 that he does the same with and has 200K as well. Both are mechanically inclined. My brother is 58 and never had a car payment. We all make our own choices and support being gouged like we are. You do have other choices.

I’m sorry but I don’t see the point in leasing unless you swap cars every three years and have car allowance from work or something.
The trade in will also reduce your tax hit on the car. A lot of people don’t take that into consideration.

Leasing isn’t the best investment, and that’s a lot of cash for an sr5.

However, if the cash is flowing, do you, and enjoy what you drive!!

My Colorado had a tranny shudder when I bought it at 32000 miles. Dealer did the fluid flush/swap as recommended by a GM bulletin. It was out of warranty at the end of February and they don’t warranty what they call maintenance. Estimates to investigate and repair are $1000 to $8000 depending on what’s wrong. It’s a known issue in Colorados and GM won’t do a recall or fix out of warranty. My other option is buying a used Tacoma using equity I have. I want a truck that lasts 2-300000. I’m driving the next one into the ground ! So what’s the best years to by used ?

3 year old Tacomas around here are $40000 with 30-60000 on them.Seems they hold value really well . So a new one at $42500 seems like a no brainer. Trucks are too expensive no matter what route I take.

i do not think that is a good deal, particularly if you intend to lease and buy later as others suggested.

if i were you, i would look into fixing the shudder on the colorado. yes, it is a known issue but, there was a TSB that eventually called for a different type of fluid that was supposed to fix or drastically improve the shudder. i would make sure the dealer used the latest fluid that GM recommended to fix the issue.

i would also talk to a reputable independent transmission shop before getting rid of the colorado for a tacoma, used or new. 3G tacoma's have their share of known issues, some are very expensive to repair like oil leaks and burnt valves. you aren't guaranteed 2-300,000 trouble free miles in a tacoma.

the 4G is unproven and imo, it is never a good idea to buy the first year of a new release. my gut tells me the 4G will not be any more reliable than the 3G.

if you are hell bent on getting a reliable tacoma, i would at least spend some time trying to find a lower mileage 2G from outside the rust belt. yes, you'll pay dearly for it. but, it will also have the greater chance of having fewer major problems.

    my $.02.

Just remember it's a first year for a new gen there is always hiccups and issues. I wouldn't consider a 4th gen for another year or 2.
Also leasing is dumb did you mean finance?

He’s willing to give you an SR5 for the same price as an Off-Road? Could he keep a straight face when he offered it?

The SR5 has a higher msrp than the off road I looked at by $4000. The off road he had was pretty basic. But was a manual and fun to drive. Had zero options/upgrades inside the truck. I like heated seats and steering as well as the tech upgrades the SR5 has. Only thing I like about the off road is bigger tires. I don’t go off road to warrant the suspension upgrade. It’s a trade off. I’m not committed to any truck currently. I have money down to hold one and if I don’t like it, it holds the next one to look at. Gonna go back and run more numbers this week to see if I can do more. Either financing or lease , I’m looking at over $50000 plus with interest rates the way they are. A lot to consider at this point. Hell, maybe I’ll order one to my spec and wait. I have two company trucks I can drive.

I don’t. But GM has let me down 3 times on 3 trucks. New ones! Dont like Ford, Ram, or any other major brands as far as looks and pricing. Trucks have jumped $10000 in a few short years. You’re simply never gonna buy a new truck again for less than mid 40’s at minimum. Are they overpriced ? Yup. But so is everything nowadays ! Whatever I buy, I want to drive for approximately 15 years. Last truck I’m buying before I retire. Then we will most likely have one vehicle or this truck and wife’s newer vehicle.
