Don't opt for a BB gun, pellet guns are much better, especially for pgeon hunting.

As far as stopping power i wouldn't go smaller than a 9mm. I recently bought a Beretta 92fs, I love it! shoots great, cleans easy, and you can hav 15 rounds in the magazine. I also hunt with my .357 mag, and my .22 revolver(for squirrels and coons). A full size pistol is nice to shoot and can be aimed faster IMHO, but some people don't like carrying them, but if its gona be a truck gun then you probably won't have it on your belt much anyway.
If you want some serious stopping power then you will have to go with a revolver, you can get nice ones in .38 special and up, they kick like a mule in compact versions, but it'll only take one shot to stop an attacker.
Check out www.gunbroker.com they have forums and lots of used guns, usually wiht goods picks to look at. But the forums will probably help you find what you're looking for.

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
Correction....the barrel itself does not make it more accurate, the distance between the sights makes it easier to aim accurately.
The longer barrel will give you more velocity.
    Likely better control of recoil.
    Maybe a little less loud.
I totally dig on SW revolvers. Just shot a friends' 686 Custom.
5" with unfluted cylinder. Nicest trigger I've ever shot.
    Cool rig.
We shot his XD9mm...Decent firearm but not my cup of tea.
