I think Atomic 47 gave some good advice in his last sentence.

"My advice, ask people who live in your area, and if there are any, ask the people who actually run winter tires."

Oz --- it is really humid in Kansas. I live in Eastern Kansas we have hills here. The snow was wet and weighed a ton. The tires were just fine the first year. I have a snow blower and the snow was at the top of the blower on the drifts. It was over a foot where we did not have drifts. I can only share my experience with the OP. I think Atomic in the quote above gave some good advice ask some Tacoma owners in the area and see what they do.

Driving around in a foot of fresh snow in a 4wd truck is no testament to the tires capability. You probably could have done that with slicks in your tacoma. But, on compact snow, how was your stopping distance, or your ability to make evasive maneuvers? I didn't think so. And with that, I'm done. Forrest Gump was right.

So does mine. That's about 20" of accumulated, of course, not sinking all the way down. Duratracs are a bit better than dunlop AT2s, eh?

Here's another, it nearly reached my crotch when I hopped out, and I'm not a midget. Chained up in the rear, and steeper in real life then it looks.

Never had a problem out of my AT20's in Washington State. But that's not in Canada.

Drove from pittsburgh to morgantown through a blizzard, I was driving on the shoulder as all the cars on the interstate were stuck and spinning. No issues whatsoever.
I was running goodyear duratracs and I'm convinced that played a major part.
4 hi all the way home....

BFG AT/KOs were absolutely great in deep snow.

My duratracs didn't do as well in deep snow, but for your normal icy/slushy/slick interstates in Colorado they really impressed me.

100% agreement with OZ. The stock Dunlop's are dangerous in wet snow you will slide sideways on the crown of the road. Early and late winter in the North Country we get greasy wet snow and during that time the Dunlop’s lived in the barn it was the safest place for them.

Firestone Winter Force about $100 each this will be my 3rd winter with them. Guess this is not enough choices? http://www.tirerack.com/snow/Winter...ype=AB&startIndex=0&search=true&performance=W
There are a great deal of people that think wider is better not so with a snow tire if you really want to go where it snows and come back. Yes the symbol is a performance rating, snow performance. Mud and snow is a compromise tire it is not a snow tire.

I wish the TPMS isn't there in the first place so new rims/tires can be swap easily without having to worry about the TPMS. It's more of a headache and a waste of $$ than a safety feature for me.

It depends on your type of snow driving... Skinnies are generally better but if you drive in soft stuff and do not want to sink down all the way there are wider options. I just stuck with 31 10.5, nothing too wide or too skinny.

Oh my, I will on year six of my studded winter force, which were actually bought for a previous truck. Perhaps new ones in the 235/85-17 size. Tall and skinny is better in snow.
