Couldn't tell you much about the snow, I know my 2014 TRD Offroad 4x4 does great in the sand at the beach.;)
If I am going to drive in the white stuff it's going to be the sand with the warm sun shining down on me.

some of this, a little of that

Um this was taken at my work after driving accross town in the snow. Like another said the 1st winter they were ok, I did not just back down my driveway. By the second year they were not so good so i did replace them. As far as swerving on ice at high speeds, i dont know of much that would help you there...

Thanks for all the comments folks. My plan is to see how the stock tires do with some weight over the tires- if they don't cut it I'll spring for new ones. And of course drive carefully in bad conditions.

I heeded the recommendation from TW members not to use the stock Dunlops in the winter, and chose to purchase snow tires for winter use. Total cost was $600 for tires and steel wheels. A small price to pay to protect my $25K investment in the truck.

    This.

Get a good A/T tire like mentioned. I have Nitto Terra Grapplers and like em around here in the snow. Some like to add weight in the bed, but have never found it necessary. I have done just fine. Even did fine when we got the couple feet a few years back and still had the stock Rugged Trails on it. Those suck too, but if you have snow driving experience, you'll be good.

    Also  from the Burgh.

 That is why I bought studded I-Pike RW11's. Not worth the headache of an accident, time, pain, money, etc.

I grew up in Erie, moved to Pittsburgh a few years back. Here in Pittsburgh we only really get snow once or twice a year it's mostly iced up hills you have to worry about. I used stock tires on my last two trucks in Pittsburgh and had no issues (1993 S10, 2004 Dakota). You should be fine with your Taco if it's anywhere as good (This will be my first Tacoma winter).

Words of advice if you aren't used to RWD:

Go slow. On turns, the back end will get loose/kick out on the ice. With AWD; when you feel it sliping I tend to stay on the gas a bit and other wheels will pick it up and pull you through. RWD when your back end loosens up; lay off the gas a bit and let the tires catch again before either getting on the gas again (gently) or popping it into 4 and trying again. I've done multiple winters up in Edinboro my S10 (no LSD) with the cheapest car tires I could find and the last few years there I didn't bother to sandbag the backend.

I ran the dunlops for my first winter and they maybe had 8k on them. I didn't find them all that horrible but had weight in the back and drove cautiously. I did use 4wd a bit though. I will say that I will have new AT's on by this winter though...

Our definition of 'significant' differs I think; I grew up in Erie which had 138 inches last year... :) To me Pittsburgh just gets a misting outside of a few days; you have to pay much more attention to ice on cleared streets vs inches of fresh powder every morning.

where I am located is 180" average... I snickered at Kansas (no offence to you) I don't plow less than a foot of snow. not worth starting the tractor.

Ok folks, it is not the AMOUNT of snow we get, usually between 20-60" per year, it is the fact that the last few miles in are on a poorly maintained county road, steep, winding, no guardrail, and the last 1/2 mile is owner maintained gravel. And it is maintained with a snowblower. WE ARE IN A HOLLOW. The snow does NOT melt, it turns to ice, and the road is steep. Even a two wheel drive truck with CHAINS fails on it. The ONLY thing that works well is four wheel drive and SNOW TIRES. Either the studless or the studded.

The TACO works very well with studded snow tires on four wheels.

My wifes grandma can drive in fresh powder. :D Just sayin. Do you live in the actual city? Because they can't clear streets worth a shit. Probably the worst public works ever for snow removal. I haven't lived within the city limits for a few years. But every winter, I know exactly where the city line is while driving. LOL.

I'm not putting down Erie's snow. I have a place in Pymatuning just south of Erie. I love the snow and winters up there. All PA people know above I-80 your getting the snow. But Erie is pretty flat. I'd take a couple feet in Erie any day over just a few inches of wet shit on the hills through the city.

Again, around here, you can't beat a good A/T tire. And make sure the tire is siped also.

I run Toyo wintercats and rarely need chains even when passing bigger trucks stuck in deep snow on logging roads. These trucks rock in snow if you have the right tire. Two, or in my case 3, sets of wheels will save your winter rubber. When they're no longer very good in winter, they become my spring/ fall wheels. When they're balding, they are hot weather tires. I'll run them nearly bald while getting 4 or 5 winters out of the newest set.
